Please have a look and advise if/how I can get rid of this problem...

Hey Geoff   :)

Until your HJT log gets analyzed...

...searching with Google, I see many other people reporting that error message, all with a variety of solutions & speculations.  Thanks for posting exactly what the message said.

Have you ruled out a possible problematic third party IE add-on (Active-X control, toolbar, etc.)?

Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) and then browse to those specific sites and see if you can log in without the error?  Might help narrow it down?

To allow add-ons to run again, close Internet Explorer and restart it normally.

Let us know, and welcome to LandzDown forum.

Corrine

Hi, Geoff.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
  • Save it to your desktop and run it.

    • Click Next
    • Click Install
    • Make sure "Run fixit" is checked
    • Click Finish
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  • Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log as a reply to this thread

Geoff

Here's the results of following Ripley's advice regarding Internet Explorer add-ons...

1. When I removed all add-ons the problem when away... I was able to log access the sites that I previously had problems with but they (one of them) indicated that I need to Java enabled to access the site.

2. When I re-enabled the Java stuff, the problem re-occurred.

3. I then followed the guidance of that website and went to get and install the latest Java software.

4. That has since cured my problem of the SysFader errors when logging into these websites.

5. I have left all other Internet Explorer add-ons disabled unless there is a need to turn them on. The only one I have had to add so far is the Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper.

6. This seems to have cleared my problem, however I have followed the advice of the latest posting from Corrine and have attached to log files from fixit and a new one for HJT. Please let me know of your analysis of these files and what you think I should do going forward.

Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated and I hope this is the end of my problems with SysFader...

Thank you so much...

Geoff  :Hammys pint:

Ripley

Geoff good on you!  :)

I quote Corrine about others who were trouble-shooting computer mysteries, "A nice piece of detective work!"

#5 concerning "disabling all"...looks a bit drastic?   I had hoped discovering the problematic add-on(s) would have solved. Hopefully, as you experiment with each, one at a time, full functionality returns.

On the Java that you updated, as an aside, please remember: updating your Java does NOT remove the older versions!  Those left-over older Java are what leave you vulnerable to possible infection.  See Corrine's step by step here.

Beyond the error that was an annoyance, there is a link that I find helpful to bookmark for future reference, for not only myself, but to pass on to friends & family members: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Scroll down to BPS Spyware & Adware Remover:
Quotefalse positives work as goad to purchase; company is known adware distributor

From a link on that page:
Quote* Note on BPS Spyware & Adware Remover: Sometime in early 2005 Bulletproofsoft released a new version of BPS Spyware & Adware Remover (version 9). This new version sports a fresh interface as well as a firewall. It also carries the alternate names Adware Cops (downloadable from adwarecops.com), Adware Striker (downloadable from adwarestriker.com),Spyware Cops (downloadable from spywarecops.com), or Spy Striker (downloadable from spystriker.com). Although the Adware Cops, Adware Striker, Spyware Cops, and Spy Striker applications might initially appear to be separate applications, in fact they are just the latest version of BPS Spyware & Adware Remover, only re-skinned. The Adware Cops, Adware Striker, Spyware Cops, and Spy Striker installers even download and install the full BPS applications from Bulletproofsoft.

Someone more knowledgeable than me will be reviewing your latest logs.
Thanks for posting the steps you took to solve the SysFade error.  I expect it to be helpful for others with the same problem.

Corrine

Actually, you did a great job.  In fact, the reference you found was much better than what I was reading last evening before I ran out of time.

Geoff, if it were me, I would not want BPS on my computer.  Please determine if you wish to uninstall it and if so, post a fresh HijackThis log so we can see if there are any remnants.  If you elect not to remove it, note that there is another item I would suggest you review and that is the search link for need2find.  For background, see Current Practices of IAC/Ask Toolbars by respected researcher, Ben Edelman.

Should you wish to remove it, start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against the following, and only the one item, and press "Fix Checked":

A safe way to clean temp files on your computer is with ATF Cleaner.  You can download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/ .  Save it to your Desktop.

To run ATF Cleaner

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
  • Shutdown/restart the computer.

Geoff

I have done "all" that you have recommended and I think that my problem with SysFader is completely eliminated...

As far as the Java updates, I removed all remnants of Java following Corrine's instructions and installed just the latest Jave Run Time Environment (JRE) 6, Update 5.

I un-installed the BPS Spyware and Adware remover and then I fixed the item in HJT as Corrine recommended as well.

I have re-enable all of the IE add-ons that I had previously disabled and everything is still fine.

Here are the updated logs from Fixwareout and HJT...

I have downloaded and installed ATF Cleaner and will continue using it to clean my PC.

Thanks for all your help Corinne and Ripley and please let me know if there is anything else that I should do according to the logs...

Hi - just what you need yet another person jumping, in on this post.

On the HJT log, you still have one entry, could be just "clutter"

Please disconnect from the internet, close all browser windows, including this one.

Run another HJT scan and check the following file to have HJT fix:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BPS Spyware Remover] C:\Program Files\BPS Remover\BPSRem.exe /STARTUP

Re boot the PC........

Check/go to- remove if you see it:

C:\Program Files\BPS Remover ......remove the file

To be honest I am not sure about, what appears to be, your anti virus and firewall - TELUS.  Not finding much info on it.
Not saying it is bad, but you maybe better off with something else.

BG

Time is a thief- One more today here is one less tomorrow

Geoff

Bin there done that... I guess that the HJT log that I added was before I removed the BPS Spyware and Adware Remover... it is gone... see HJT log to follow...

The TELUS stuff is my internet service provider and I am a TELUS employee... I would be (extremely) interested if there are any conerns with this software/application...

Regards,

Here is my current HJT log file...

Hi

You wrote:

QuoteThe TELUS stuff is my internet service provider and I am a TELUS employee... I would be (extremely) interested if there are any conerns with this software/application...

To be honest, just did not find much info on these entries, except the last one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TEPA.exe] "C:\Program Files\TELUS\eProtect Advisor\TEPA.exe" /AUTORUN
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TELUS eProtect] "C:\Program Files\TELUS\TELUS eProtect\Rps.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [-FreedomNeedsReboot] "C:\Program Files\TELUS\TELUS eProtect\ZkRunOnceR.exe"

Info I have, on the last one is here.  This link was provided by Castle Cops data base:

http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/05-05-2005/0003545403&EDATE=

Again not saying anything bad about it........Just don't know anything about it is all.

Are you paying for it?

The article you provided the link to describes Verizon's internet security package which sound virtually identical to the TELUS eProtect that you can read about here...

http://consumer.telus.com/portalWeb/inlineLink/CP_SCS/Product/Internet/Security/Product_Equipment_Description/Internet_Security/

I get this package with my TELUS High Speed Internet access at no extra cost. TELUS is the incumbent Telephone Company here in Alberta and provides telephone, internet, data, and television services to customers throughout Alberta, British Columbia and Central Canada. Same idea as what Verizon provides to customers in many of the states in America (USA).

From the LzD team, you are Welcome  :mitch:

These steps will help protect you:

MICROSOFT UPDATES

It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to   Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

SPYWARE PREVENTION

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read TonyKleins How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?. You need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard, to prevent spyware intrusions. IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. All of the above have good free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

More information and downloads are available at the following links:

Spyware Blaster

Spyware Guard
IE-Spyad
