Yet again, Mitch has saved the day!  Thank you, Mitch!

Here's what happened --

After reading this thread at BBR (Winfixer/ Vundo / Virtumonde Victims : Please Read), I decided I'd better check my version of Sun Java.  Sure enough, I had an old version as well as prior versions on my system.  So I downloaded the latest update, disconnected, closed the browser, did the update and then uninstalled the prior versions.  Since it was late, I shutdown.  All set, right?  Wrong.  When I connected yesterday, all I could get is that darn "page cannot be displayed" message -- regardless of the browser I tried.  I went to a friends and tried downloading another version of Java, thinking the one I got was corrupt.  Nope  That didn't do it.  I knew I was connected, but checked my settings, dialup properties, firewall, etc.  No go.

I sent Mitch a PM outlining what I had done.  Doesn't he come back with several suggestions, the first of which was the solution!  So, should you have a problem with your browser after a Sun Java update, remember this thread and go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > <APPLET> tag support > check the browsers listed there just as shown in the image!
