Hi, I was directed to this website....

I just got Think Point stuck on my computer. I was going to purchase it but something didn't feel right so I looked it up on my iTouch. Turns out I was correct... So far, I got out of it and I'm running Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. After the scan is finished and I delete the files...is my computer completely clean? Thanks a whole bunch!

Hi, Electricvio.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum!

Well done!  Think Point is a nasty rogue so you were wise to take the action you did.  Let's take a closer look to see if there appears to be any remnants.

Please download random's system information tool (RSIT):

  • Download RSIT by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Note:  For users with 64-bit systems, please download RSIT from here.
  • Double-click RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized).

If only the majority of folks had similar alarm bells, and didn't purchase this nonsense.  Well done, mate.

If only the majority of folks had similar alarm bells, and didn't purchase this nonsense.  Well done, mate.

I almost bought it! I actually entered some of the information at first! But then I was like wait a minute...80 dollars? Better check out what people say first!

And thank you so much! ThinkPoint scared me to death at first! I thought I had to restore my laptop AGAIN. And that's such a hassle considering I haven't backup this computer yet :T

Oh and for some reason, every time I go on Chrome now, it prompts me to run it as an admin. This started right after I removed Think Point. Why is it like that ? Thank you so much!

Corrine

Hi, Electricvio.

I'm glad you checked it out first!

One thing to keep in mind is that Windows 7 has a much more robust System Restore than Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Let's do a bit of cleanup and take care of the out-of-date and vulnerable programs on your computer.

1.  Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running (located at C:\Program Files\trend micro\Stella.exe). Place a check against the following, making sure you do not check anything else by mistake:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

2.  Adobe Products:

Adobe Flash Player

Direct download for IE:  http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe

Direct Download for non-IE (Opera, Firefox etc): http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

After install, verify Flash Player version for each browser installed at About Flash Player page.

(Uninstaller of previous version:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html )

Adobe Reader

Update Adobe Reader

Install the latest version of Adobe Reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/ or switch to an alternate PDF reader.  There are a number of open source readers available from http://pdfreaders.org/.

3.  Java

Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 14.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.  (Windows Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
Then download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 22.

Download Link: Java SE Runtime Environment 6u22

Note:  UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update.  They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.

4.  Clean up temp files.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean
I don't use Chrome so cannot advise you as to why it is prompting you to Run As Admin.  Perhaps uninstalling it, followed by a restart and a fresh install will solve the problem.

5.  Scan with MBAM again:

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware then click the Update tab and "Check for Updates
  • Once the update has been installed and the program has loaded, select Quick scan
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:

    • Click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See the Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.
    ** Note **

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

For JavaRa, the log is empty...

And this

Get the latest Java Runtime Environment to use Sun Download Manager

Internet Explorer Users: Check the top of this page for a "Java(TM) Web Start ActiveX Control" message in the information bar. If it appears, click it to finish detecting your Java version.

We were unable to detect a recent version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) on your system. With the latest JRE, you can automatically download, install, and run Sun Download Manager (SDM) directly from this page. We highly recommend SDM to easily manage your downloads (pause, resume, restart, verify, and more). Visit java.com for the latest JRE.

was on top for the Java SE...so i just downloaded the available file "Windows Offline Installation"...is that okay? I'm not too tech-savvy with all this stuff :T

Doing Step 4 now! :)

Electricvio

I did the scan but nothing was infected! What was supposed to happen?

Corrine

Yes, the offline installation is fine.  After installation, check Add/Remove programs to confirm the version is Java(TM) 6 Update 22.

Yes, it is. Thank you so much for helping! :D

Corrine

Excellent!  I take it that the MBAM scan was clean.  If not, please post the log.

Having a firewall, anti-virus and anti-malware software are not enough.  You also need to stay current with security updates.  If you don't have your computer set to automatically install the Microsoft Security Updates, please check for updates now.  For additional information, see my blog post Understanding Microsoft Updates

To periodically check if your system is missing security updates or has insecure applications, install Secunia Personal Software Inspector or, alternatively, visit http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ .  The Secunia Software Inspector runs through your browser with no installation or download required and does the following:

  • Detects insecure versions of applications installed
  • Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
  • Assists you in updating your system and applications
Install and update SpywareBlaster to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

My favorite security software is WinPatrol which includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html

Please let me know if you have any questions.
