trouble

I have a Dell XPS 400 and I am wondering if it needs to be replaced because it is extremely slow.  Anytime we launch a program it takes forever to load and run.  I have gone through the add remove programs and deleted some olf games that my kids used to play to free up space, but that has not helped.  I used the services of Landzdown a few years ago and was very satisfied.  You helped me get rid of some spyware problems that I had.  I am wondering if you can take a look again and see if there is a specific reason for such slow performance.  Also everytime I shut down the computer the jusched.exe program is not responding and I have to press end now.

Thanks

Corrine

Hi, trouble.  Welcome back.

Just like automobiles, computers may need a tune-up -- or just plain wear out and need to be replaced.  Let's see what we can do to tune up your computer until you are ready to replace it.

Please go to C:\RSIT and double-click info.txt to open it.  Scroll down the log to Microsoft Plus! Photo Story 2 LE-->MsiExec.exe /X{0EB5D9B7-8E6C-4A9E-B74F-1 and copy/paste the rest of the log in your next reply.

Adobe Reader has had critical security updates.  Install the latest version of Adobe Reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/

Next, you need to remove the vulnerable Java software from your computer.  Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall the following:

Java(TM) 6 Update 21
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.  (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
Then download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 23.

Download Link: Java SE Runtime Environment 6u23

Note:  UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update.  They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, be sure Quick scan is selected, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:

  • Click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See the Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.
** Note **

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Take a walk through the "Security Garden" -- Where Everything is Coming up Roses!

Remember - A day without laughter is a day wasted.
May the wind sing to you and the sun rise in your heart.

Hi, Mark.

Yes, that provided the additional information that was needed.

With the update of Java, are you still having a problem with jusched.exe at shutdown?

MBAM found what appears to be leftovers from a couple of old rogues on your computer.  Just to be sure there are no additional remnants, please do the following:

Please follow these instructions carefully.

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your antivirus and anti-malware security applications. If not disabled, these programs will likely interfere with cleanup process. This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.

Note:  If you are unsure how to disable your security software, see the instructions in this topic at Tech Support Forum:  How to disable your security applications.

Now, please run ComboFix:

  • Note:  If infections are found, ComboFix will automatically reboot the machine to complete the removal process.  Please ensure all opened windows are closed before proceeding.
  • Double-click ComboFix.exe on your desktop and follow the prompts.
  • As part of the process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. The Recovery Console will allow you to start up the computer in a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed on the computer, ComboFix will continue the malware removal procedures.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

  • After the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click "Yes" to continue scanning for malware.

  • When finished, a log will be produced. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

How is your computer now?

Take a walk through the "Security Garden" -- Where Everything is Coming up Roses!

Remember - A day without laughter is a day wasted.
May the wind sing to you and the sun rise in your heart.

trouble

Corrine,

The jusched.exe problem is fixed.  So the computer shuts down nicely and startup is a lot faster.  After I ran the combo fix the computer did not automatically restart, but I manually restarted.  It is still pretty slow when I open up internet explorer.  The first time I opened it after combo fix it asked me if I wanted to set it as my default and I said yes.  I also got notification of some mircosoft updates and a java update.  I installed both.  Hopefully I can trust these notifications.  Here is the combo fix log.

Sorry it was not a java update.  It was an adobe acrobat update that I had to manually install along with the microsoft update.

Good, because I was going to ask you about the Adobe update.  :)

As to the need to set IE as your default browser again, that is normal.  However, speaking of browsers, you have an extremely old, outdated version of Firefox installed on your computer.  Like other third-party software, browsers also get security updates along with enhancements.  Either uninstall Firefox or update to the current version.

Custom CFScript

Note: The following instructions were created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

  • Please open Notepad (Click Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK).  Copy/Paste all of the text present inside the code box below:

RegLock::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CLSID\{A483C63A-CDBC-426E-BF93-872502E8144E}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CLSID\{A483C63A-CDBC-426E-BF93-872502E8144E}\Elevation]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CLSID\{A483C63A-CDBC-426E-BF93-872502E8144E}\LocalServer32]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CLSID\{A483C63A-CDBC-426E-BF93-872502E8144E}\TypeLib]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\Interface\{E3F2C3CB-5EB8-4A04-B22C-7E3B4B6AF30F}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\Interface\{E3F2C3CB-5EB8-4A04-B22C-7E3B4B6AF30F}\ProxyStubClsid32]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\Interface\{E3F2C3CB-5EB8-4A04-B22C-7E3B4B6AF30F}\TypeLib]

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all antivirus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please also post a fresh HijackThis log, located at C:\Program Files\trend micro\Mark Neary.exe

trouble

Well the last time I shut down I had the jusched.exe not responding error again.  Also I had a java update on my notification bar so I updated it.  After the update process it asked if I wanted to check the version of java that I was running but I declined.  The computer seems like it slowed down again.  Sorry to be such a pain  :smash: :smash:

Corrine

Hi, Mark.

I am curious.  Do you use all the toolbars you have installed?  Also, is the slowness just at startup, when loading the browser, when surfing the web or other activities?

Please provide an extra ComboFix report

  • Push the "Windows Key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • Please copy and past the following into the box:
    C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt
  • click Ok

Copy and paste the report into this topic for me to review.

trouble

Corrine,
The computer starts up faster than it did, but when I open programs like outlook or internet explorer it is really slow.  Especially Internet Explorer it take a long time to connect to my default comcast screen.  I do not think I use any of the tool bars!  Not sure how they all got on there.  I do have a couple of teenagers that like to surf so I have a pretty good guess.  I would not mind removing them, but when I go into add remove programs I am not sure what some of them are so I have not removed them thinking it might get rid of something that I actually wanted to keep.

Not sure what all this windows stuff is?  I tried to get rid of the backyard hockey game the other day and it did not let me uninstall.  I do not think the kids play this game anymore so I dont need it.
Thanks
Mark

Corrine

Hi, Mark.

I believe the problems you are experiencing are due to a combination of several things.  First, the computer is getting old and it does not have a lot of RAM.  Second, there are a lot of unnecessary programs in start-up.  IE7 should be updated to IE8 -- and we can help with the excess toolbars.

First, however, Adobe Reader still isn't current.  You have Adobe Reader 9.4.2 and the current version is 10.0.1, available from http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Next, although you indicated you got the Java update, you don't have the latest version which included massive security updates.  You need  Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 24.

Download Link: Java SE Runtime Environment 6u24

Note:  UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update.  They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.

As to the toolbars, the following are in add/remove programs.  If neither you nor your teens are using them, you should be able to remove them:

Bing Bar
Bing Bar Platform
Dell Toolbar
Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer
Google Update Helper
MSN
Yahoo! Toolbar

I wouldn't worry about the Backyard Hockey game, although you could try uninstalling it in Safe Mode.  Your computer hard drive has plenty of space with 77% free:  System drive C: has 113 GB (77%) free of 148 GB.

Before I forget again to mention it, personally, I would not allow any programs in the Trusted Zone.  After all, even well known sites can be the victim of an SQL injection, hidden scripts, and more.  If you elect to remove the entries from the Trusted Zone, please do the following:

  • Launch Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools  menu, and then click the Security tab.
  • Click Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.
  • Click the site you want to delete, and then click Remove.

Trusted Zone: intuit.com\ttlc
Trusted Zone: turbotax.com

After you have updated Adobe and Java, please post a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look.  Also let me know if the Java update takes care of the Java error at shutdown.

trouble

Corrine,

Sorry for the delay in my response.  We got a bunch of snow here in Washington State and work has been busy.  I think all of this work is beginning to pay off.  IE launches faster without all of the toolbars and I dont even think they will be missed.  Here is the latest hijack this log.

Hi, Mark.

Yes, I've heard that you got some snow out your way.  We got about 8 inches of the heavy wet stuff here the other day followed by another 4 last night.  At least the snow last night was light & fluffy. :)

I'm glad to know the computer is doing better.  I have some additional instructions to finish cleaning things up and a couple of suggestions.

First, it appears that when you updated Adobe, you didn't uncheck the McAfee Free Scan included with the update.  You Uninstall need to McAfee Security Scan using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel.  There is no need for it to be running since you have Norton.

  1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Select McAfee Security Scan.
  4. Click Remove and follow the steps provided.

Next, please do the following to implement cleanup procedures and also to reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Note: In the event you wish to contribute to the ongoing development of ComboFix, the developer is accepting donations via PayPal.

Let's take care of a couple of left-overs.  Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.  Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O9 - Extra button: ComcastHSI - {669B269B-0D4E-41FB-A3D8-FD67CA94F646} - http://www.comcast.net/ (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: Support - {8828075D-D097-4055-AA02-2DBFA9D85E8A} - http://www.comcastsupport.com/ (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: Help - {97809617-3937-4F84-B335-9BB05EF1A8D4} - http://online.comcast.net/help/ (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Although you have a lot of room on your hard drive, you may want to clear out the download file.  I note, for example Ewido listed there and it was sold and discontinued long ago.  Some of the other downloaded files would need to be replaced with the current versions so the old downloads are not of any value.  If you wish, you can remove them with HijackThis along with the above "missing files":

Having a firewall, anti-virus and anti-malware software are not enough.  You also need to stay current with security updates.  If you don't have your computer set to automatically install the Microsoft Security Updates, please check for updates now.  For additional information, see my blog post Understanding Microsoft Updates

To check if your system is missing security updates or has insecure applications, install Secunia Personal Software Inspector or, alternatively, visit http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ .  The Secunia Software Inspector runs through your browser with no installation or download required and does the following:

  • Detects insecure versions of applications installed
  • Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
  • Assists you in updating your system and applications
My favorite security software is WinPatrol which includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html  In addition, using WinPatrol to manage Startup programs will make your computer more efficient.  For example, SigmatelSysTrayApp, QuickTime, Adobe and other do not need to run at startup.  You can easily access them via Program files if/when needed.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

trouble

Corrine,

When I was running the combofix program I got an error message about a pev.exe file.  It looks like the combofix worked and uninstalled successfully.  Thanks for all of your help.  Things seem to be working a lot better.  I might even be able to hang on to this old dog for a little while longer.

Mark

Corrine

Great, Mark!  Now you just need to keep an eye on the teens using the computer and keep the third-party software updated.

Take care,

Corrine
