Hi Corrine,
Once again thank you for all the help. I know there will be a time when I am back to bug you but I am so happy there is someone out in computer land that will take the time & patience to help me. Hope you have a great weekend

Hi Corrine,
I did answer your last post but when I looked back it was not there. Still no problems with the e-mail but when there is I will send it to you. I do have a quick question . When we turn on the computer the start up page shows right away but you can't do or go anywhere for about 15 min,the computer is making a lot of noise & you have to wait till it stops. When we then hit google which is the home page it takes another 2-3 min. to get to that. Did I do something wrong, this got real bad when I changed to firefox. I hope this is the last question I have to bother you with.
Thanks
Mary

Sorry I did not see page 2, told you I am not that smart on here

Awe, Mary, if this is the last question you're going to ask me, then that means you won't come visit again.  :(   Seriously, that is why we are here, to help where we can.  I certainly don't have all of the answers, but what I don't know or can't find, someone else likely does know and can step in to help.

I recall that this was your daughter's computer.  Windows XP was first released in 2001 and the operating system was installed on this computer on 10/28/2004 8:38:06 PM.  Even if it sat on the shelf for a bit before your daughter purchased it, we know that it is over 8 years old.  Although not a hard and fast time frame, the average lifetime for a computer is 3-5 years.  Much depends on the hardware of the initial build as well as the environment (heat, humidity, pet dander, etc.).

Obviously, this computer has had a good life and the best we can do is keep it going until it either won't start or you and your husband decide to replace it.

I didn't notice anything in the logs you posted that I thought would slow things down, but it wouldn't hurt to run a temp file cleaner and double-check with AdwCleaner.

1.  Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean
2.  Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode to your Desktop.

  •   Double-click AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  •   Click Search.
  •   A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  •   Please post the contents of that logfile with your next response.
Note: The log can also be found at C:\AdwCleaner[XX].txt where XX denotes the number of times the application has been run, i.e., R1

Hi Corrine,
I did not do this yesterday as I needed some time to do it. Hope this is right. The way things are going I don't think this will be my last question, I am sure that I will come & make you go crazy with me. You have already been so much help to me. Yes I know this is a old computer but we hope it lasts for a while longer because I don't think I would want a new one.  Once again thank you
Mary

Corrine

There's no hurry, Mary.  We'll catch up with each other one way or the other.

Now I'm going to have you use AdwCleaner to remove what it found and then run a second tool as a follow-up.  I've found the combination of the two seems to do a more thorough job.

1.  Please rescan with AdwCleaner.

  • Double-click AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click Delete.
  • Everything that was found will be deleted.
  • Save any open files and approve the reboot.  A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found at C:\AdwCleaner[XX].txt where XX denotes the number of times the application has been run, i.e., S1

2.  Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Disable your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it.  If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

I hope this is right, if it is I guess I am getting a little better.   When I start the computer a little box comes up & states firefox seems slow to start. I knew this quite some time now.
Thanks
Mary

Corrine

Yes, Mary, you did good!

The "Firefox Health Report" is a new feature released in the latest version.  At this point, the only help provided is this support page:  Firefox takes a long time to start up | Firefox Help.  Looking at the log you posted earlier, you don't have a lot of add-ons.

One thing you may want to do is have Firefox clear history and cache when it is closing.  Illustrated instructions for cache & history are here:  How to clear the Firefox cache | Firefox Help.

Interestingly, what was found was related to Internet Explorer, not Firefox.

Please do the following to uninstall AdwCleaner.

  •   Double-click AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  •   Click Uninstall
  •   Confirm with yes
Go ahead and delete the Junkware Removal Tool from your desktop.

Hi Corrine,
I removed both the AdwCleaner & Junkware. Firefox was already set to clear history & cache. So none of this will help this computer to start up faster? Does every old computer take this long before you can do anything? Guess I have to live with this. Thanks
Mary

mary3444

Corrine,
When I went to Firefox to to check on cache is was not marked so I checked that but 2 others were marked there too in Privacy. They were Browsing History & Form & Search History. Should all 3 be marked.
Thanks
Mary

Corrine

Hi, Mary.

Yes, with an old computer with much less processing power than new machines, there probably isn't too much that you can do.  Having cache, history, etc. cleared when closing Firefox will help.

Hi, Mary.

I don't know if you're receiving alerts for new replies.  I was helping someone else and remembered you hadn't been able to uninstall Adobe Reader so am sharing the information with you:

I located an uninstaller provided by Adobe:  Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs.  (It is demonstrated here:  http://techdows.com/2013/01/remove-adobe-reader-9-x-and-xi-with-official-adobe-reader-and-acrobat-cleaner-tool.html.)
