Microsoft getting VERY pushy

Fired up my laptop this morning, and after logging in Microsoft grabbed my entire screen (ENTIRE SCREEN!) with a warming message that said "Sorry to bother you, but July 29 is quickly approaching....".

Talk about annoying! It was bad enough that the small 2 x 2 inch reminder was repeatedly popping up, but now they grab the whole screen?? Amazing. I wanted to write back "Yes, you are f*#king bothering me!"

Watching the news lately, I think that this is all a master plan by MS to ultimately force paid yearly OS subscription services down our throats. Very sneaky! Yet, very capitalistic. When computer and software sales go down, boost your bottom line (and quarterly earnings) by forcing paid OS subscriptions on your current users.

Much the same as outsourcing the manufacturing of Levis, and everything else. When the market is saturated, and the investors start getting edgy about the dropping quarterly earnings, ship the manufacturing offshore to $2 per day laborers to boost the bottom line.

OK, my rant is over, but I DON'T LIKE BEING FORCE FED by MS, or anyone else. Look out MS OS users, I'll bet that it's coming!

For anyone interested, I removed KB3035583 via the Command Prompt route.

It's amazing what small things can get me annoyed on a sunny Thursday morning.  ;)

They must have sent it to everyone who has not installed Windows 10. That includes me as I am staying on W7 till 2020.  I just hid it and also have the block installed. Maybe I may buy a new PC then or I may be 6 foot under.  :D

Yup, I'm quite sure they weren't singling me out for the Thursday morning Blue Screen of Microsoft Death. They say misery loves company, yet I wasn't happy about wasting 4.78 minutes of my busy morning searching the web for how to stop this nonsense. Anyway, I should have done it months ago, yet the little 2x2" reminder didn't bother me too much and I just let it ride. But when they grabbed my entire screen I finally said "enough is enough!".

I'm getting tired of the complete corporatization of the Internet. I want a rotary phone, a Slinky, Jiffy Pop popcorn, and The Smothers Brothers. "Hey Mr. Peabody, where's the Wayback Machine?" "Take me to 1965, and we'll call it a day."

Those folks who don't want to upgrade can click the bottom left button "Do not notify me again", no?

KB3035583 has been released at least a dozen times.

Ah, I just checked and it was released yet again on July 19th. Time to hide it again.

You might want to bookmark Woody's page: https://www.askwoody.com/
I usually check his page after patch Tuesday to read all the gotchas before I attempt to install anything.
I don't intend to stop even after the July 29th deadline passes. I just don't trust MS!

I have 3035583 hidden but I also have GWX Control panel installed so I've not seen most of what others report.
I did see one item on my "workhouse" desktop computer several months back.
After that I went looking to see what I might have accidentally installed.

KB 3173040 is what throws the purple full-screen "Sorry to interrupt" message on Windows 7 and 8.1 computers.

The other new nag has a clearly visible "Decline free offer" button.

Probably so, yet I was caught by surprise, hadn't had my coffee, and failed to glance over at the little letters in the lower left corner.

Thanks for that! Another thing to do tomorrow. Yippee. The fun never ends.  ;)

If you have the white Windows flag in the system tray, you can open it and select the "Decline free offer" without waiting for it to appear again.

Thanks for the link, Corrine. After contemplating this issue for a while I've decided to stay with Win 7 on this machine. It works well, never any surprises, and maybe most importantly, I'm familiar with it. My Win 7 laptop is already over 6 years old, so I'm quite sure that the hard drive will be a concern long before MS drops support for 7 in 2020. As for my whining above, I just don't like being told what to do (haha).

All that aside, I've been very happy with my MackBook Pro over the past year, and Office for Mac 2011, although sticky at first, runs well on the Mac. At this point I'm thinking about getting second MacBook Pro and running Win 10 as a second OS via Bootcamp.

QuoteOnly a couple of days are left until Microsoft's "everyone, gather around and grab a free copy of Windows 10" offer expires.

Without getting into the "should you, or should not you" argument again when it comes to the upgrade offer to Windows 10, you may wonder if there is a way to grab the license of Windows 10 without actually using the operating system right away.

There are good reasons for upgrading to Windows 10, and there are reasons not to upgrade. Some users might want to grab the license while it is free, and continue to use another version of Windows for the time being.

The main idea behind the train of thought is that you could upgrade to Windows 10 at a later point in time without having to pay money for it.
