 :rose: mitch,
the ONLY was for me to get to "warn me when web sites try and install extensions or themes" is thru:
* TOOLS - OPTIONS - CONTENT *
i CAN'T get to it thru Edit - Preferences... there's no option for that on my EDIT menu...
:smash:
it STILL isn't working -- i have these as "Allowed" :
addons.mozilla.org
update.mozilla.org
noscript.net
- i'm getting the feeling something is buggy with the download, tho... there's reference on the page itself:
"READ THIS BEFORE COMMENTING
********************
This is not a support forum!
If you think you've found a Bug" etc

***
anyway, this time i tried the ALTERNATE download method: i RIGHT-CLICKED, downloaded as SAVE LINK AS, then dragged the Icon Thingie to my FF Window -- like it said in the instructions -- and THAT didn't work either.
:Win73:
(for the download, i allowed JAVA, JAVASCRIPT, didn't block popups, etc.)
***
no, i've never added an FF extension before.
i'll try tinkering with my Norton Firewall settings...

is there ANOTHER FF extension that's SAFE & Simple, that i can try downloading to see i'm able???

mitch

are you sure you have Firefox/1.5.0.1?

that's what is says in help ???
the feature you have in tools was moved in 1.?? to preferences

ok a 3k simple addon !

give me a few min
o have to fire up XP to check a few things

mitch

ok
there are some differences between windows and linux...sorry !

in tools do it

that post is because he hates e-mail and cries for help when he has a forum !!!

ok do this
1. click help and see  that you DO NOT have a "about plugins" on the list
2. tools/extension/
3. on the popup window click "get more extensions"

on that page on the left side click "misc

then scroll down and you will see
"aboutPlug 1.0"
click "installnow"

click Yes to you want it installed ( it is unsigned but safe)

then it will say it installed
close out your browser
stardt ff again and look in
\"help" and see if you show "about plugins

it is a quick 3 K install

if that doesn't work i suspect you have something flaky?

the most important thing on a browser is the bookmarks, you can just go through and set up the preferences easly so

export your bookmarks to the desktop!

top part file/edit/view/BOOKMARKS/tools/help

click bookmarks
click manage bookmarks
click file
click export
export the bookmarks to the desktop

now if you re-install you can just go there to impoort them

then uninstall ff and RE download it and try again

that's all i can think of , sorry

mitch

one last thing
i said about anti-spyware????

what ACTIVE anti-spyware are you using? i don't mean the click and scan, but something like defender,ms anti-spyware  t-timer

with it making changes in the browser action i am thinking one of those is blocking it? doubt norton frirewall as yu can download it ;-)

(you do see activity of the download?)

babyoh

 :rose: hey mitch
in FF HELP, this is ALL i have:
contents - for internet explorer users - release notes - report broken web site - check for updates - about mozilla firefox
:gwave:
i tried that TOOLS- EXTENSIONS - GET MORE - "About PlugIn 1.0" download: and the SAME THING HAPPENED... it wouldn't download.
** i DO have T-TIMER running. (and Spyware Blaster, which i don't think is Real-Time)
- i'm beginning to get a little concerned, though: i sometimes run OPERA, FIREFOX and even I Explorer and NETSCAPE at the same time (to check my sites)... Never had instability with them open at same time, but wonder if adding things to FF might make other browsers crash...
** BY THE WAY...
i can DOWNLOAD mp3's and JPG's etc in FF just fine, by right clicking, and choosing SAVE AS
...it could be Tea Timer...
no other, simple way for me to turn off FLASH in FF?
in OPERA, i just de-select ENABLE PLUGINS... very easy... if i want FLASH, i just ENABLE PLUGINS again.

mitch

might disable t-timer and try the about download? then you could re-activate it?

remember the old win3 days...disable the a/v before installing software?

it sounds like one of your programs is block install ( i have no trouble with defender here)
now might be a good time to find out what is wrong and who is blocking the install?

on linux it can get confused by ff and netscape at the same time!!!!! same names for several folders ;-)

if you have spywareblaster it can block flash on IE for sure !

babyoh

 :rose: thanks, mitch.
right now i'm thinking, i should leave well enough alone -- i'm lucky all these browsers work together without crashing. if i start messing too much with plugins, etc, that could change. and i WOULDN'T be happy.
:gwave:
one question, though  -
i CAN (in FIREFOX), Right-Click something (JPG, MP3 etc), choose "SAVE AS", and that works Fine for me to Copy/Download things.
* is this other way of downloading -- DoubleClicking an icon -- all that much DIFFERENT?
(i guess it MUST be, since it's not working for me) ...i would have thought if i was able to Download 1 way, that i'd be able to the OTHER way too.
:blink1:

Herumutsu

Hi again.

If a solution without installing further extensions is what you are looking for, have you already seen my posting from last week? (direct link)
Just making sure you didn't skip over it by mistake.

babyoh

 :rose: herumutsu,
i DID try that, and for some reason it didn't work. i might not have made that clear, but right under your post suggesting it, i wrote:
"weird. that didn't work...
i re-named it to NPSWF32_OMIT.dll
but FLASH still comes in loud and clear-"
maybe i need to RE-BOOT after the re-name?

Herumutsu

Clearing the cache could help - Re-booting most likely won't make a difference, though, but if all else fails, it can't hurt to try that as well.

I realize you did try renaming the file and it didn't work out - however, for the second attempt I suggested adding the '_OMIT' after the '.dll'-part (as in the example: "NPSWF32.dll_OMIT"). If both that and clearing the cache after the change don't work out, that's where re-booting might be worth a try.
