possible to 're-hide' file?

While cleaning up after acquiring a case of 'THAGen6' Trojan (touche, socially-engineered phony FedEx e-mail -- and stupid me for biting), I hit the 'unhide' button rather than the 'info' (why, yes! I AM an experienced computer person). The file, {a string of characters and numbers, like a registry entry}, has a .CBM extension; apparently some inoffensive bit-map.

My question is, can I restore 'hidden' status to this file, and, if so, should I even bother? [sigh] I'm just glad WinPatrol doesn't have a 'factory restore' or 'self destruct' button....

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi, redstick.

Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

You could "self destruct" if you selected some of the hidden files for delete on reboot.  Fortunately, unhiding them isn't dangerous unless you are the type to start poking around and deleting file names you don't recognize.  (There are people who do that.)  I sorted the hidden files on my Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) by Module and then by Path and didn't locate anything with a .CBM extension (http://filext.com/file-extension/CBM#).

The description you gave of the file (a string of characters and numbers) leads me to believe that it is a CLSID corresponding to something in AppData and should not be a problem to leave it unhidden.  In fact most of the similar files I have listed are for AppData\Local\Temp.

So, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the quick reply, Corrine. I think that your advice is probably the best; I will let sleeping dogs lie.

It was Win Patrol that first alerted me to my problem by detecting a 'run once at restart' entry. I have always liked Win Patrol for the information on strange files it provides; now I have even more respect for its rapid response capabilities!

Thanks again!

You're welcome, redstick.

Three cheers for Scotty saving the day!
