I've been hearing a lot of good things about Avira's AntiVir program. Some say that it's detection rate is close to that of Kaspersky or Nod32. I personally used it a long long time ago but it looks like it's making its rounds again.

Anyone here use it or have any insight on the subject?

I just noticed that I put this in the wrong place. Sorry about that. I tend to skip details after 12am. If a mod could move this to the correct forum, I'd appreciate it.

I always mean to try it, Im interested in any comments about. My NOD32 subscription is expires in 2 or so months.

Hi, I use Avira, and have found it to be very good for a freebie, it gets updates everyday and is running in the background 24/7, if anything changes, it lets you know and asks what you would like to do.
The full version is only about  13 Gbp so it is afordable.

HIPS is my potion as well as Mamutu to the gremlns among other programs, but i recently been testing Avira (Free) and i must say as one who is detested AV's since 98 because they either were too severe on my system or skipped many a new variant, i think this may well be my next second best choice, with NOD always my first.

If Avira pans out ok with version 9, (v.8 is ok too right now), i will in all likelihood go Premium with it on some of my units.

Theres just something about a "Lite" but formidable AV i been waiting on for seems decades with the exception of NOD which is already smooth, lite, and updated frequently. I got a handful of some very rough virus/malware samples and so far Avira & NOD is caught them all.

I have Avira AntiVir Premium. It works very well.
I went to download a file which had a real Trojan in it PC tools AntiVirus software missed it and it just about took down my computer (so much for the test on PC tools AntiVirus) :sos:

Avira AntiVir Premium blocked the Trojan before the exe even started to download on to my computer.

It is not to user friendly  so it is not for everyone.

I did switch to it in the end, a couple of months back. I have been very pleased with Avira Premium. Anyone running the new beta? I registered for it yesterday, but have no had reply as of yet - maybe the registration is closed.

Hello SpyDie my long time associate. LoL

CAN NEVER FORGET how You fashioned me into the very formidable opponant against malwares i work against endlessly now, thanks as always and the credit plus honor is in your favor and well appreciated.

AVIRA is come of age and is now matured IMHO. Where i do use AVIRA, it's been a very reliable and "Lite" AV that does a superb job at what it was designed to accomplish. I always been turned off by AV's hence my transition over to HIPS and the like, but Avira IMO stands out as one of the better progeammed AV's currently in distribution right now i found.

I hope others reap the same benefits i enjoy with this safety AV solidly guarding their boxes.

I too am pleased with Avira Premium, I changed to it about a year ago when my ZoneAlarm went west with their update to version 8.x, I have run Avira since with no problems.

However, I today accepted the automatic update to Avira Premium version 9 offered to me from the desktop updater (Free version users won't see this for a couple of weeks) .....

It failed to install properly and it took me two hours to sort it out. By all means accept the version update but make sure that you have backed up your hbedv.key in case you get the same lock up in the update process that I experienced (Vista Home Premium SP1).

If the update process goes well for you, great. If you experience problems do a clean install - download "Antivir Premium 9 (no internet connection)" from the Avira website and uninstall your current Antivir Premium version via Control panel. Next, physically disconnect from the internet and shut down all running programs (firewalls and protective programs). Having done so run the downloaded installer - when asked for the licence code click on the "I have a hbedv.key" link and point it to your backed up key. Let the installer continue and when complete re-boot.

This worked for me and I am now running the latest version of my favourite AV

Which is why, dear friend, that, particularly in lieu of the Spring Equinox, I am doing my best to prepare my garden so that all the flowers will bloom in profusion and not die on the stem.
