InstallShield?

This was preinstalled on this new computer and I can't seem to figure out what it does.  What does it shield me from?
I've been to their home page and googled it, but I still caan't figure out what it's doing.
Any explanations in a language I can understand?

InstallShield is used by software developers to package software so that end users can install/uninstall the application easily/safely. It is a way to provide for a simple installation, quickly and without affecting other system components/characteristics.

Thnx.  No wonder...the search pages I was seeing was for developers.  But did find one for end users at consumer.installshield.com
