Hi guys, after clicking on a youtube link last night, my laptop has been taken over by Bit Defender Core "Malware Protection". There is a message that is insisting that I sign up to BitDefender so that it can rid my laptop of all the infections that it has found. I have refused to fall for this and have kept my bank details to myself. I am currently running Trend Micro Internet Security Pro but it has failed to pick up this BitDefender virus. I have never installed or used BitDefebder before.

It has taken over my system, it wont allow me to open the internet browser, task bar, or anything. The Only programme that is running is this BitDefender. I've looked through my list of programmes so that I can attempt to uninstall it, but its is not showing up.
There is a constant message displayed on the screen: TCrdMain.exe can not start. File TCrdMain.exe is infected by W32/Blaster.worm. Please activate Malware Protection to protect your computer.

Please help me guys, this virus has really knocked me out.

Hi, Vee.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

We will do our best to assist you.  However, in order to do so, please follow all instructions provided in the sequence given.  Do not install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use.  This may cause conflicts with the tools being used in the cleanup process.

If you have questions regarding any of the instructions or problems running any tools, please let us know.

Please restart your computer in Safe Mode with Networking. (To do this, turn your computer off and then back on and immediately when you see anything on the screen, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter on your keyboard. Windows will now boot into safe mode with networking and prompt you to login as a user.)

Please download rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:

One, Two,Three or Four

  • Double-click rkill to run.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
  • Do NOT restart your computer after running rkill as the malware program(s) will start again.
Notes:

If you you receive security warnings about rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, be sure Quick scan is selected, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:
  • Click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See the Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

** Note **

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Download DDS.scr by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2
  • Double-Click dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal
  • Shortly after two logs will appear, DDS.txt & Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Vee

Hi Corrine,
I've restarted my laptop and all seems well. Thank you, thank you very much, the depression is over  :hallo:

Corrine

Hi, Vee.

I would like to see some additional cleanup of your computer as well as advise you of vulnerable, outdated third-party software on your computer.  Are you willing to continue working with me?

Hi Corrine,
that would be helpful thank you. Just tell me what to do.

Corrine

Hi, Vee.

You are advised to uninstall BitTorrent as P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer. They have always been a target of malware writers and are increasingly so of late. P2P security measures are easily circumvented and if your P2P program is not configured correctly, you may be sharing more files than you realize. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.

With P2P file sharing, what means do you have of identifying or authenticating the source of the download? In addition, a file can be distributed among many hosts, and peers will provide for download the sections that they have already downloaded. This results in the distinct possibility of a distribution method in which malicious bits are mixed with with good files.

Now on to the outdated, vulnerable Adobe and Java software on your computer.

Adobe
Last week Adobe released critical patches for almost all of its product offerings.  You need to update both Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Player.

Install the latest version of Adobe Reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/

Adobe Flash Player requires a separate installation for IE and alternate browsers:

Direct download for IE:  http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe
Direct Download for non-IE (Opera, Firefox etc): http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

After install, verify Flash Player version for each browser installed at About Flash Player page.

Java

Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 14.  Then, please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.  (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
Then download and install Java SE Runtime Environment 6u26.

Note:  UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update.  They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.

Please go here to run an on-line scan from ESET.

  • Note: It is easiest if you use Internet explorer for this scan.  (If you use an alternate browser, it will be necessary to download the ESET Smart Installer)
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic and also let me know how things are now.

Hi Corrine,
just completed the ESET scan and 1 infection was found:

C:\Users\L500-1XJ\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\59\1304453b-7654a371   a variant of Win32/Kryptik.OYG trojan

and this is the logfile:
ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:
OnlineScanner64.ocx - registred OK
OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK

Corrine

Hi, Vee.

To clear the Java cache, please follow the instructions at How do I clear the Java cache?.

To check if your system is missing security updates or has insecure applications, install Secunia Personal Software Inspector or, alternatively, visit http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ .  The Secunia Software Inspector runs through your browser with no installation or download required and does the following:

  • Detects insecure versions of applications installed
  • Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
  • Assists you in updating your system and applications
Install and update SpywareBlaster to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

My favorite security software is WinPatrol which includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Corrine, now I'll try and do the same to my desktop which has become ridiculously slow in the last year.

Corrine

You're welcome, Vee.

I'd be happy to review logs for your desktop to see if I spot anything.  To avoid confusion with this computer, it would be best to start a new topic.  Just follow the instructions above for scanning with Malwarebytes and post the logs in the Log Posting Instructions topic.
