First please be aware I know just the basics about computers. Other then what I can google and learn. This however has me stumped.

Computer info :
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Verison 2002
Service Pack 3
Intel (R) Pentium (R) M
processor 2.13 GHz
0.00 GB of Ram

Problem: From what I can tell one nasty bug !

The computer can boot windows. When it is booted it starts out a normal blue windows background with just my computer and recycle bin appearing then the screen goes black. Norton pops up in the bottom left and a pop up in the middle reads

n8qk6e1xE9R6iW.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Then additional pop ups (approx 12-15) read:

system message - write fault error
a write command during the test has failed to complete. This may be due to a media or read/write error. The system generates an exception error when using a reference to an invalid system memory address.

It gives you the option to cancel, try again or continue.

Another pop up comes up:

System error. Hard disk failure detected.
It is highly recommended to run complete HDD Scan to prevent loss of personal files.

While booted I do not have the search option to key the system restore.
So from there I booted into safe mode.
I proceeded to do the system restore. Selected the date and clicked next. Read through the next frame and clicked next. Nothing happened.

So I rebooted back into safe mode and followed another way using the command prompt. This did not work as well.

Please I am open to any suggestions. One thing that is dehibilitating to this situation is I do not have access to the internet through the computer with the bug and I do not have recovery disks.

Hi, carrie83.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

One thing you need to seriously consider is the message:  System error. Hard disk failure detected.   If you can access important files while in Safe Mode, I suggest that you save any important documents or pictures to external media (CD, DVD or USB).

The file identified by Norton is most definitely undesirable.  Have you tried a full system scan with Norton while in Safe Mode?

As to connecting to the Internet on that computer, try Safe Mode with Networking.  To do this, turn your computer off and then back on and immediately when you see anything on the screen, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter on your keyboard. Windows will now boot into safe mode with networking and prompt you to login as a user.

So that I can try to determine what malware is on the computer, either while connected via Safe Mode with networking or download to a working computer and transferring the the infected computer, please download DDS.scr by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2
  • Double-Click dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal
  • Shortly after two logs will appear, DDS.txt & Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply
