XP COMPUTER'S PROBLEMS

Hello, Landzdown Forum.

This post concerns a computer that is not mine. It runs with Windows XP and has 512gb RAM. Last months became very slow, a lot of programs cannot run and internet explorer has many problems. My friend went to computer technician who told her that the computer is very old and she needs a new computer. Is this true? Or the problems are due to a virus or something (a lot of people log in this computer)?

Welcome back! It seems you have become the "go to" friend for computer problems. :)

Although it is an old computer (Install Date: 4/7/2007) and the hardware can be wearing out, Windows XP is still supported until 08 April 2014.

Your friend's log shows that Threatfire is the active antivirus program. However, the log also shows that the drivers failed to start. This is because Threatfire has been retired. (See here.)

As you know, there are alternative antivirus solutions that are free for personal use, The following antivirus software programs are free for personal use, several of which include those listed below. If a licensed/subscription antivirus solution is preferred, my favorite is ESET.

avast! 5 Home Edition
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
Microsoft Security Essentials

I suggest beginning by uninstalling Threatfire via Add/Remove Programs. Follow that with the removal of TuneUp Utilities 2013. System optimizers/registry cleaners tend to do more harm than good.

Next, Adobe Reader has had critical security updates. Please uninstall Adobe Reader 9 and download the current version 11.0.01 from here: Download Adobe Reader.

Following completion of the above, let's see if there is anything I've missed or shows up via ComboFix. Please follow these instructions carefully.

Download ComboFix from here.

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your antivirus and anti-malware security applications. If not disabled, these programs will likely interfere with cleanup process. This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.

Note: If you are unsure how to disable your security software, see the instructions in this topic at Tech Support Forum: How to disable your security applications.

Now, please run ComboFix:

Note: If infections are found, ComboFix will automatically reboot the machine to complete the removal process. Please ensure all opened windows are closed before proceeding.
Double-click ComboFix.exe on your desktop and follow the prompts.
As part of the process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. The Recovery Console will allow you to start up the computer in a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed on the computer, ComboFix will continue the malware removal procedures.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

After the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click "Yes" to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, a log will be produced. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hello, Corrine. Georgia cannot find Threat Fire in her programs. Also she asks if the logs above refer to both hard disks the computer has. If no, she should make the procedure for the other hard disk as well, right?

She's right. I was looking at the log rather than the installed programs. As to a second drive, let's see what ComboFix shows. Please have her proceed with the rest of the instructions.

The threatfire uninstaller didn't fix the problem, and she ran combofix.
She ignored the warning and the process started. The computer made a restart but no log appeared.

Then she remembered that she didn't save combofix on the desktop, but in downloads...

Sorry, I was away from my computer and then working on a log at another site. Please have Georgia navigate to C:\Qoobox and look for ComboFix.txt there. Alternatively, she can Hold down the Windows Key and the "R" key. A run box will appear. Copy and paste the following: C:\Qoobox\ComboFix.txt then click OK

Notepad will open with a log. Post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Another problem now. When she enters C:\Qoobox\ComboFix.txt in the run box, a warning says that the path cannot open due to a wrong address or something like this. She then found the folder Qoobox in C, but there is no combofix.txt there...

Ok, please ask Georgia to delete ComboFix from the download folder, download a new copy from here but to be sure to place it on her desktop and try running it again.

If Georgia has no luck, we'll take a different path.

No luck again. Combofix.txt is nowhere. Meanwhile, the Threatfire warning is still pops up. What is this thing? And why it appears as the computer's antivirus program, but it does not exist in program files?

As I recall Threatfire was never considered a major player in the antivirus field. When you talk to Georgia next, have her delete the ComboFix file she downloaded to her desktop and do the following instead:

Please download OTL ... by Old Timer . Save it to your Desktop.

Right click on OTL.exe select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
Leave the remaining selections to the default settings.
Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
When done, two Notepad files will open.
- OTL.txt <-- Will be opened, maximized
- Extras.txt <-- Will be minimized on task bar.
Please post the contents of both OTL.txt and Extras.txt files in your next reply.

Be prepared for two long logs.
