Just wanted to let you know I shut down the computed & decided to restart it to see if there was a change. When I hit MSE I got a message searching for mssecesexe. Then another message came up saying The item you selected in unavailable. It may have been moved, renamed or removed. I hope this helps. Thank you again. I will check tomorrow Mary

QuoteWhen I hit your No 1 it said can't continue code 80072F8F

The first error is back to the time again.  :(  See if you can run the Fix it here:  Windows Update error 80072f8f.

After that, go back and see if you can run the Fix it in #1.  If you cannot run that, try the Fix it in #3.

MSE updates through Windows Update, which is why I'm trying to get that working properly.

See my next reply, please.

Hi, Mary.

After you have run the Fix it in the above reply, please run this Microsoft tool, following the instructions in the wizard:  http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9748340

After running it, please restart your computer and see if you can reinstall Microsoft Security Essentials from here:  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201 (Select ENUS\x86\MSEInstall.exe).

I tried to run the Fix it on your first post & it still does the same I get the file download that never gets anything in the estimate time left. Just like before.

On control panel everything is correct with the date & time

When running the microsoft tool it says microsoft fix it has been processed. Then I restarted the computer

When I tried to reinstall MSE I still get cannot complete 0x80070643

Hi, Mary.

Since the attempt to reinstall MSE failed, please run the Microsoft MSE uninstall tool again, following the instructions in the wizard:  http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9748340

Restart the computer and then see if you can install the free version of Avast antivirus.  I'm providing the link to Softronic because the Avast website redirects to CNet, which has a nasty habit of including unpleasant toolbars and other additions.   Nonetheless, please watch carefully, while installing it to be sure to uncheck any toolbar or other add-ons.

Hi there,

I did the uninstall tool again. At the end it said Microsoft fix it has been processed.
I bet you will be very glad when I don't bother you any more, I am sorry about all of this. I am just hope I don't need a new computer & this can be fixed some how.
I just finished downloading Avast antivirus & it downloaded with no problems. I guess now I have virus protection. At the end of Avast it said I am protected for 1 month & then I can get the free version or pay for the other version. Is the free version good for this computer? Should I keep try to download those updates for Microsoft. How often should you run the Avast & the malaware on here. Have a good night
Thanks Mary

Hi, Mary.  There is no need to be sorry.  Knowing that you are not real experienced with various computer functions, I've been attempting to locate straight-forward fixes, hoping they would solve the problems.

Yes, you can continue using the free version of Avast.  You will need to respond to the prompts to continue with the free version.  A weekly scan should be sufficient.  Don't forget that you also have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.  You can do a periodic scan with that as well, being sure to check for updates first.

I also suggest you install the Private Firewall.  Information is available here:  Privatefirewall.

Another security option for you is SpywareBlaster (See SpywareBlaster Updates).  Here is a nice tutorial for setting it up:  Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware, Hijackers, and Malware.

The security updates that your system shows as failed are for Microsoft Office 2003.  You could try manually installing them from the Download Center, however, in looking at some of the missing updates, they indicate that Service Pack 3 is a prerequisite.  Instructions for determining whether SP3 is installed are available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821549.  Method 1 is fairly straight-forward.  It is only necessary to check one of the Office programs (i.e., Excel) to find out if the version is 11.0.8173.0 for Service Pack 3 (SP3).

I want to again thank you for all your help. I know you will be glad to NOT get a post from me again. I will try not to mess this computer up, not sure if I did something wrong to begin with. I will keep up with the scans & I did download the new firewall. Next year when Windows no longer sends downloads out for XP I will be back on to see what I need to do.
I want to wish you & your family a Happy Easter.
Mary

Mary, I have not minded in the least helping you.  Don't hesitate to ask questions.   (There are other steps that could be tried, but they get rather complex.)

Happy Easter, Mary!
