Hi Joe,
the log at the end of my last post is what's at the address you gave me...mine says C:\Program Files (x86)\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log
The log is a .txt file that was created 04/29 at 10:50 p.m.

I thought it looked mighty brief myself!  I ran it twice because I thought sure that couldn't possible be right.  :)

I wonder if that Donna :)  cleaned up the machine so well that ESET can't find anything wrong. That's what it looks like, I would have had you run it again but you have already done that and Malwarebytes was clean too and that's a good sign.

Not sure what Donna's next instruction for you is. We should wait for her to proceed.
You're only as safe as your last update.

Evenshade

Thank you for your interest...yes, that would just be *the* best scenario, wouldn't it?!  < s >   I wanted to say that I think I've "met" you on the gardenweb computer forum in the past and you were always helpful.  Thank you again for that, too.

Donna has been great!  She is very patient and easy to work with.  I had a virus years ago on another machine and ravencajun sent me to Landzdown at the time.  What a nice group and we're grateful that you all take the time to volunteer.

You're right, Pam.  Joe can be found at GW.  Although I don't know if she's been there lately but Donna has spent some time at GW as well, although with a different username. Ravencajun is one of our friends too.  She is R-C here at LandzDown.

Is Windows Update working on that computer now?

Hi,
Yes, it is working, Corinne.  It's set to update automatically and it's up to date.

By looking at the latest log posted, I would say that the laptop is squeaky clean!!    Nice job on your part!!

Hm? It has been awhile since I have visited GW, hasn't it? My user name there is bbbluz.

Yes. Windows Updates and making sure that MSE is updated and running is my next goal before we remove the tools we had to install.

Please do me a favor. I need to know if SP1 ever downloaded and installed. To find this out please do the following:

  • Click on Start.
  • Right click on Computer and choose Properties at the bottom of the list.
  • In the System window that opens, look for Windows Edition (which should be the first category listed).
Service Pack 1 should be listed there. Do you see it? If not, we will need to get SP1 installed.

Also, since Microsoft Security Essentials updates had failed prior to the system crashing, I'd like to make sure that it is updating now. Please go to the MSE control panel and click on check for updates. I don't have MSE installed and can't provide exact instructions to do this. I believe that you can just click on the little castle in the notification tray by your clock and open up the user interface from there. If you have trouble finding your way, I know that Joe has it installed on his system and maybe he will help in that department, unless Corrine has it installed and beats him to it. ;)

Let us know what you find... :)

That is excellent news!

With MSE, right-click on the green MSE icon in the tray and select open.  The latest update is 1.173.1095.0, dated May 02, 2014 12:57 AM UTC.  (You can see the version installed by clicking the arrow next to Help and selecting "About".

Hi Donna,

I am so excited...we're getting close to being back in ship shape!

I do have the same version as you do of MSE and it says it's up to date.  Good news!

However, I do not have SP1 listed under my Windows Edition.

I saw a semi-alarming item in MSE under the history tab that says I have a trojan quarantined - it's called Trojan:JS/Miuref.B and it looks like I can put a check mark in the box next to it and choose "remove all"...is that what I should do?  Quarantine date was 03/23/14.

I'm switching back and forth from PC to laptop when I write some of these notes.  I don't see a "REPLY" box at the bottom of the most recent post (12:36:13) on the laptop, but I did have that option on the PC.  Is that normal?

Thanks!
Pam

It appears that MSE did it's job by catching the malicious file and sending it to quarantine. You are perfectly safe as long as that file stays there. If you feel more comfortable, go ahead and clean out the quarantine folder.

Yes. That is normal. If you click on the Reply button at the bottom of the post, the Reply box should open for you.

It is very important that we get SP1 installed. Let's see if we can get it to install from the desktop.

  • Click >>here<< to find the download for Windows 7 SP1.
  • Make sure that the selected language is English and click the Red Download button.
  • In the next windows, scroll down and look for the windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe file. (The size of the file shown to the right will be 903.2MB and should be the 2nd file from the bottom of the list.)
  • Click to place a checkmark in the little box to the left of the file. The Download Summary: bow will open so you can double check to make sure you have the correct file.
  • Click on the blue Next button and in the box that pops up, click on Save File and save to the desktop.
  • Once on the desktop, right click the file and follow the on screen instructions to install the file.
If for some reason the install fails, please provide the Error Code. If the Error Code is not present, please do as follows to find the Error Code:

  • Click on the Start orb and type Windows Update into Start Search and click on it when found.
  • In the next window, click on View update history found in the left side pane.
  • From the list on the next page, search for the failed update, left click on it to highlight, then right click and choose Copy Details
  • Paste the results in your next reply.
Keep me informed to your progress.

H Donna,
I've saved the file to my desktop but when I right click and choose Open I get a box that opens and says

Windows can't open this file
windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe.part
To open this file, windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it.  Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select form a list of programs that are installed on your computer
what do you want to do?
Use the Web service to find the correct program
or  Select a program from your list of installed programs

I must be missing a step..help?  < s >

DonnaB

Pam? Who is your ISP? The file is only partially downloaded. The portion of the file below, that I have bolded, indicates this:

Quotewindows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe.part

Right click on the file and choose Properties at the bottom of the right click menu. You should see a file size in there somewhere. What is the file size? It should be 903.2 MB or there about's.

If it is not, you will need to delete that file and re-download it. Due to the size of the file, you will need a consistant, fast connection for the file to download in it's entirety. Also make sure that the AC adapter is plugged in so that the laptop will not lose it's charge while it is downloading or the file will be corrupt.

If you can not get the file to download to the desktop, you may have to resort to using a better connection. Many times I have had to go to my local library to download files of this size.

Hi Donna,
My ISP is Suddenlink.

It does say the file size is 903 MB    In that same window it says The file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer and there is a button next to it that says "Unblock" on it.  Could that be the problem?

DonnaB

Hm? Now that's new to me! Yes. Please click on Unblock. Keep me informed...... :)

Yep, that did it, Donna!  And it's installing.   :mitch:      It does say it may take an hour or more so I'll post as soon as it's finished.

I'm curious about something.  When Windows Updates come along, sometimes they have updates for newer Service Packs...do I only update the ones for SP1?  Or for any/all SPs?

DonnaB

Oh that's good to hear.

There is only one Service Pack 1 for Windows 7. After that Service Pack is installed all other updates should just be security patches, definition updates for Windows Defender, Hotfix updates etc., etc. I have my Windows Updates set to Install updates automatically (recommended). That will install ALL updates that are offered.

Are you getting repeated updates that fail? After SP1 installs, have a look in View Update History and see if any have failed and if they had ever been offered before and installed or if they continue to fail.

Getting late here and I have to work tomorrow. I'll check in before I leave for work to make sure all is ok.  You have done a fine job helping me to help you. I sure wish everybody was as easy to work with!  :rose:
