Hi Pam,

My apologies for the delay.

We need to repair damaged/missing services that may have been caused by the malware infection. Let's see if system file checker will accomplish this for us. Please do the following:

SFC Scan

Click on the Start button and in the search box, type cmd.exe
When you see cmd in the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
When command prompt opens, please type or copy/paste the following command into it, then press Enter

sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue.
When the scan is complete, open another elevated command prompt as we did above and copy and paste the following command, then press Enter.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

This will place a sfcdetails.txt file on your desktop with only the SFC scan result details from the CBS.LOG in it.
Please copy and paste the results in your next reply.

Hi Donna,
I am writing from my PC and not the laptop we're working on. A strange thing has happened. I can't boot up the laptop. I shut it down for the night and then decided to turn it back on to see if there was a next step ready yet. When it tried to boot up, I saw ASUS on the screen, then the words starting windows, then the Windows logo...waited a few seconds and it didn't move on....just a black screen. I did a hard shut down and tried 2 more times. The third time I tried to start it in safe mode with the same result. This had happened one other time a week or 10 days ago when my husband was using it. I didn't think much about it because it booted up on the second try and hadn't happened again. Mystery! :thud:

By golly, gee willikers! So much for easy! :huh:

When I first read above that this happened a week to 10 days ago, my first thought was hardward issue, though I asked an associate if he had ever had this problem before and there could be a possibility of the file that was replaced by sfc might have been corrupt.

Please allow me a bit of time to discuss this and plan our next move.

Hi Pam,

Sorry for the delay. This is where we will need that USB Flash drive. I'm hoping we can boot to the Advanced Boot Options menu to access the recovery console. First, we need to disinfect your USB Flash drive. Please do as follows:

Download McShield2 to your desktop and install with default settings.
In the control center, select scanner and check unhide items on flash drives

Plug the USB drive into the clean computer, McShield will scan the device.

Next:

Run Farbar Recovery Scanner

A USB Flash Drive of 4MB or Greater is Needed

From a working computer:

Download the Tool

Please click here to go to the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool download page.
Click the Download Now (64bit Version) button and save it to the desktop.

Remove the USB drive from the working PC and plug it into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:

Restart the computer.
As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
Select English as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
Select your user account an click Next.

To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:

Insert the installation disc.
Restart your computer.
If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. The computer must be set to boot from the CD.
NOTE: Newer systems have a Boot Menu. When the system first starts booting up, (before the Loading Windows screen) you will see in the lower right corner or maybe upper left corner of the screen:
Setup=F?
Boot=F? ( The ? is the F number key you press, like F12 and you will get the Boot Menu.
Select Boot from CD. (Make sure the CD in the CD drive)
If you don't have the Boot Menu option you will need to set the CD as the first drive device in the BIOS. If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
Click Repair your computer.
Select English as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
Select your user account and click Next.

Click repair my computer (See screeshot sbove)
Select your operating system (See screenshot below)

The System Recovery Options window will open.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will have several options to choose from:
Select Command prompt (See screenshot above)
In the command window type the following:
- notepad and press Enter. The notepad opens.
- Under File menu select Open.
- Select Computer and find your flash drive letter and then close the notepad.
In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive. In your case I believe the Flash will be assigned the letter F when inserted.
The tool will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

OK, I'm getting there. In case you need to know this < s >, there wasn't a window that came up and asked me to select the operating system I want to repair. The next window was to select the user account and I did that (chose Pam)

I went through the steps and am at the place where I type the command prompt "e:\frst.exe" (without the quotes of course) My flash drive is, indeed, F. At the prompt, I typed f:\frst.exe and each time I try it, I get a reply that says "f:\frst.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

PLEH! (that's help spelled backwards) :)
