What is soccer/football without Pele? ;)  We always enjoyed watching him play, particularly since that was Jerry's "sport".  He played fullback on the 1965 NJCAA Men's National Champion Soccer Team.  He sure could boot that ball!  He was on a semi-pro team for a while too but the team didn't last long and other things were taking up his time.

I was talking to an old friend the other night who reminded me about when Jerry carried him off the field after his leg was injured in one of the playoff games.

I think the host country will be on the winner's stand.

Much more entertaining to watch than last time around, the attacking style of football produced a great Italy game (even though they didn't get a deserved point).  As for the Uruguay game, remember that England was loaded with Liverpool players, and like Liverpool they couldn't play a lick of defense.  That works as long as you can score more goals than your opponent   :(

At least Suarez didn't bite one of his teammates (or, hopefully, soon to be ex-teammates).

Netherlands and Germany look strong at this point.  USA has been a surprise, escaping from the group of death, but Belgium will be a massive test.

I must admit that the USA has been a real surprise to me. It is not too long ago that the USA team was very weak and totally unable to seriously challenge any decent team. I think, however, that their development/progress has been impressive. I don't think that anybody can now say that the USA can not play football/soccer. They are a strong challenger in all their games.

I think that the current English team is probably overrated. Yes, they have some good players, but they find it difficult to mesh/perform as a proper team. The UK press, is not doing them any favours, either. They tend to build the expectations too much, and this must be putting undue pressure on the players. I think they should develop some younger players and stop relying so much on the same "old" players. One of the problems, however, is that the English teams have too many foreign players, and this makes the development of younger players more difficult.

The Greek team is a mystery to me....
Many times they seem to be totally disinterested and, as a result,  they lose games that they should be able to easily win. Other times they seem to be totally motivated and give a very good fight. However, from one game to the next, I never know what their performance will be.
I am happy that they are the last team standing, safeguarding the honour of  the PIGS group...(Portugal, Italy, Spain, Greece)..... :mitch:
I hope they make it to the last eight, but I have my reservations.... :exorcize:

I must say that my big disappointment in this World Cup, has been the abysmal/comical and at times unacceptable standard of refereeing. Where do they find all these totally inadequate referees? Is it possible that the referees need more support during a game? I am thinking of  additional referees as used in rugby games, looking at playbacks to arrive at the correct decision. I don't think that I have seen more than a handful of games, where the standard of refereeing has been good.... :smash:

Basil

As far as Suarez is concerned, they MUST remember to feed him before a game..... :tease:
