Corrine,
Is there anything I should be doing meanwhile, or should I just wait?
Thank you
Rita

Also, as long as the anti-virus software is enable again, is it OK for him to be using the computer while we're trying to figure out why IE won't download??

Corrine

Hi, Rita.  Of course he can use the computer.

As to suggestions, this what I have so far:

1.  Winchester73 mentioned this previously.  He indicated that when he had to repair IE, he needed to run the automatic repair in aggressive mode and delete the personal settings.  The automatic wizard is under 1. Automatically open the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box at How to reset Internet Explorer settings.  Follow the instructions for a. and b.

If you still cannot download files, run the automatic wizard again but instead of selecting the default mode, select aggressive.

2.  The other suggestion was by MikeW.  Since it appears your husband's PC was automatically updated back to IE11, you would need to first change the Windows Update settings from automatic to something else (i.e., download but let me decide what to install).  Then go through the previously provided instructions to uninstall IE 11.  I suggest you use the process explained here:  How do I reinstall Internet Explorer? - Ask Leo!.

In the event you needed to go the route of uninstalling again, look in Programs for Internet Explorer, launch it and let us know what version it is -- and if you can download files.

Another thing we could do, Rita, is take a look at the computer with a different tool.  To do so you would need to download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • The first time it is run, it will produce two logs in the same directory the tool is run from -- FRST.txt and (Addition.txt.
  • Please copy/paste both logs in your reply.

Hi, Rita.

Just wondering if your husband can download programs with IE now.  If not, there is one more thing that he could try.

Download Windows Repair (All in One) from this site

Install the program then run it.

NOTE 1. In Windows Vista, 7 and 8 right click on the program, click "Run As Administrator".
NOTE 2. Disable your antivirus program before running Windows Repair.

  • Go to Step 5 and under"System Restore" click on Create button.
  • Go to Start Repairs tab and click the Start button.
  • Check 07 Repair Internet Explorer
  • Click on Start Repairs button.
  • After the repair finished, you may be prompted to restart the computer. Please allow it to do so.
  • Please post the Windows Repair log which is located in the following folder:
    64-bit systems - C:\Program Files (x86)\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Logs
    32-bit systems - C:\Program Files\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Logs
