I downloaded PDF XCHANGE VIEWER, just to try it, and it has Ask.com as a search option on the toolbar. I hope that it's only there, on the toolbar and not somewhere in my computer.

It wouldn't be there if it weren't on your computer, the question is 'where' is it ... installed programs or within the viewer?  :(

Are you saying you weren't give an option to install the ASK toolbar?  Actually, it should have been an opt-out, meaning you had to deselect the ticked box to avoid installing it.  It really is vital to read the screens during an installation ...

Click on the little arrow next to the ask logo.
Scroll down to where it says "Manage Search Providers.." and click on it.
A window will open that lets you remove, add, or change the order of the providers.

I'm just assuming, but I suspect the list of preloaded search providers is where they get funds the free version, and "Ask" got the top position by paying more.

EDIT: There's also a check box that turns them all off, if that's what you want.

You'd also best check installed programs, Panos.  Often there is an uninstaller for Ask.  Then consider installing Unchecky. The object of the software is to keep potentially unwanted programs from being installed by automatically unchecking unrelated offers.  Unchecky also provides a warning when you try to accept a potentially unwanted offer.  The program automatically updates when a new version is available.

Although an older article by How-to Geek, it provides additional information about Unchecky:  How to Avoid Junkware Offers with Unchecky

Home Page:  Unchecky

Note:  Even with Unchecky, a "custom" install of software is still recommended.  It is also advised to continue watching each screen while installing software for anything that Unchecky may have missed.

Pursuant to one of Corrine's suggestions....
I checked "installed programs".
None of the search providers in "PDF XCHANGE VIEWER" were present.

I checked my browser.
There were no additional search providers.

I tried running a search from PDF XCHANGE VIEWER.
The results opened in my browser.

If you're in the habit of doing searches from your browser, I believe it would be safe to disable the search providers included in  PDF XCHANGE VIEWER without losing any functionality.
