It won't run.  Your instructions left out one step, but I worked around that.  Been out all day, now getting furnace cleaned (it's supposed to be a cold winter, and my gas furnace is actually 40 years old! so one day the furnace guy is going to come up and say, so sorry!).

Let me try again this afternoon or evening and I will let you know.

Corrine

Since it may take a while to run, you may want to restart and let chkdsk run while you're busy doing other things.

I know what you mean about the furnace.  Mine is very old also.  (knock on wood)

In your earlier post you forgot to include the one step to get to the tools

Click Start and select "Computer"
Right-click C:
click "properties"
Select the "Tools" tab
In the Error-checking area, click "Check Now"
Click "Start"
Check the option to "Automatically fix file system errors" and click Start.

It flashes a DOS message for a couple seconds on restart as to why it cannot run Chkdsk I will attempt to record it and see what it says, it flashes by so fast I cannot read it all.

techie

Lets try it the old Command Prompt way.

Start
All Programs
Accessories
Right click Command Prompt
Left click run as a Administrator
Type after the c:\chkdsk

It should run the chkdsk process. Let us know if it works. If it runs, then we need to try the same as above, except type chkdsk/f

orillia3

As I said, chkdsk does not run.  Get the following instead.

QuoteChecking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
The volume is clean.
Cannot open volume for direct access.
Autochk cannot run due to an error by a recently installed
package.
Use the system restore feature from the control panel to restore the ...
to a point prior to the
recent software package installation.

I assume that would be prior to the Adobe installs I did yesterday.  Standby.

orillia3

Will try restore first, then command line.  I assume it would need a restart even if I did a command line, and might get the same stubborn error message.  Typical unhelpful Microsoft.  I might have to go command line at bootup.

orillia3

Restore will not run.  Get some sort of error message about unspecified error.  The last four points might not have gone back far enough anyways, as each time I restarted, there was an update installed making a new restore point.

Got chkdsk to run but procedure steps different from yours

Start
All Programs
Accessories
right click Command Prompt
run as administrator
get prompt to make changes, click yes
after C:\Windows\system 32> type chkdsk then enter
chkdsk will start and takes a few minutes to run

Repeated the above with chkdsk/f
get the following warning

QuoteThe type of file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts?  Y/N

typed in Y then enter

Will restart.  Standby.

I thought I replied already, not sure where it went.  However when it reboots,it does not go into chkdsk, it just boots normally to the password screen.  I cannot get into tools now, and every time I shutdown, it installs an update.  My restore points are all the same practically now as each time I shutdown, and installed an update, it made a restore point.

I tried removing the programs I had just installed/updated, but I lost my Wireless Assistant so am trying to restore before the restore points are all changed again.  I would like to chuck this POS but it is still useful if I could get it to work right.  I have still not been able to run chkdsk except without the F parameter.

Edit, found my Tools again.

Pierre75

I have read your other posts and don't think you are on your own. I am ageing as well. One thing I noticed to run CHKDSK. Please ensure there is a space so the command is 'CHKDSK /F' - ignore the quote marks. Hope this helps.

orillia3

Looks like there is no way to run checkdisk on this computer, not much point in running anything further until a solution is found.  I thought running at startup in DOS but that  does not seem to be an option either. Trying to avoid having to run this hard drive as a slave on another computer to acomplish.

techie

Ther eis two options left, you can try using dos command line from within Safemode boot with the F parameter. The other option is riskier with the R Parameter. It will scan and try to attempt recover if there is any bad sectors.

The only other option requires a boot disk, which you would have to have a Win 7 USB stick.

Corrine

I thought I posted this earlier, but apparently not.  Let's move on to FRST and take care of that part.  The earlier instructions are repeated below:

Please do the following to run FRST:

Note: If the tool warns you about the version you're using being an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

I had already tried to get into command line at boot with safe mode with command line.  It does not give me the option of running anything in command line as it just runs the loading and immediately goes to a command line screen, gives the old message about restarting, then does not chkdsk on restart.

The computer did not come with a boot disc, as it does not have an optical drive, only external access would be a USB stick, or SD reader.  Not sure where one would get a boot disc for Windows 7 with chkdsk on it.

I will be busy for the next couple of days or so semi-legal stuff trying to get out of a ticket plus some other stuff so will not be around much.  Will have to resume later in the week or so when time becomes available again.   :(
