Hi everyone,

First, my apologies - I've been working on a few projects and just wrapped one up (push over the weekend, but glad to see it go live). Let me see if I can help with some questions, and while things may have cleared up, I'll at least explain to help folks know (and future ones, too).

I am not seeing my name on this page? https://stats.foldingathome.org/team/261265

With the massive amount of folks that have jumped in, F@H is overwhelmed, both in compute power available, and the resources they have to manage everyone joined in. The stats pages can take a bit to catch up to things, and sometimes they do go down for periods under the current loads. Plus, you won't appear on the stats page until 1) your machine turns in a work unit, and 2) the servers process that work unit. But looking like everyone that should be there is now there. :)

Does anyone know how I can tell F@H to use more resources than when the slider is at full?
There's no other way to have it take more resources - if you have it at full, it'll max out what you have. But then there's this aspect of it...

I'm mainly running the GPU and at full it's around 40% usage which it can easily handle.

If you're using Task Manager to look at GPU performance, it's not always accurate with that. For a better view, you can download a graphics card optimization/overclocking tool to get better data. See attached image showing Task Manager's 42% vs MSI Afterburner's 97% - the folding just started in this screen grab, so you can see Afterburner showing the jump up to 90-ish percent versus Task Manager hovering right around 40.

If you're using a tool like that, though, and it's only showing 40%, then there are a couple things to consider, such as the folding slot settings in F@H, or if an updated graphics card driver would help (sometimes I find an older driver works *better* for F@H...).

On the extra slot options though...

I know there are "flags" you can mess with but I've always just left it default.

There really aren't any that will have real-world impact. The only one I'd really ever suggest (never tried it myself) is Big Advanced, but only if you have an at least 16-core CPU, and are running Linux (no-go for Windows, boo hiss).

Thank you Ssherjj and axe0 for joining in, and again my apologies for missing your questions for so long.

Regards,
Aaron

Hi Team,

I am having to drop out of the Folding@home Team because this program uses way to much CPU and the fans are roaring. My system should be able to handle it but it is not working out so well.

I would like to help but the same as you I only have Laptops.

Understandable, thanks for giving it a go!

And yeah, laptops in general are a rough spot to fold. They can't keep up with the cooling demand.

Hi Aaron,

Thank you!

It was fun while it lasted. I have desktops but they are too old to handle this app. as well.

Appreciate you (and everyone else) giving it a try!

1,000 work units!!

And we're at 3,282 of 252,534! Of course, climbing is going to get harder as we move towards the teams that have been at it a long time and/or with lots of members, but we've climbed a lot in a very short time!

Great about the points.

I am going to have to cease folding. My PCs just cannot handle it any longer and are close to overheating. They were all bought in the late 2009-2010 - 1 desktop and 2 laptops and I could hear the fans laboring and see core temperatures running above specs even on light setting. With my 30 years work of Family trees on them I was not about to lose that work. They are now running much cooler and no audible fan noise.

I may try one of the laptops again when I get a chance to off-load some of its work.

Sorry about this.  :'( :'(

And 3,000 :)

If you haven't pulled client version 7.6.13 in the last week or so (it's fairly new), it seems that the retry timers are more aggressive, meaning if you don't get a work assignment, it doesn't wait quite as long to try again. Some of those wait times were getting really long, but now I'm finding the majority of times I check, I have work assignments across the board, rather than some of them sitting in ready.

Is this the same version that added COVID19 to the choosable list? I am on 7.6.13 but I got it weeks ago. Should I re-install it?
