I am a home-bound disabled guy so my computer is my link to the outside world!  It is not running right and I am going crazy!!!  Please help!!!  Here is what happened...a friend bought me a USB 2.0 hub card so my external hard drive would work better.  I don't recall the name of the card.  So I installed it.  It kept asking me to install the software that came with it, but it was a plug 'n play, so there was no software.  Then it stopped asking and said it was installing the software.  When it was done, I plugged in my external drive and it didn't work.  I tried to get it working for an hour with no luck.  So I took the card out and gave it to my friend who took it back to the store.  BUT since this has happened, my computer is running at 100% CPU usage.  It is so frustrating!!!  I ran Hijack this...below is the log.  Any help would be great appreciated!!!  Thanks!  Tony

How do you mean "the computer is running at 100% usage"? Do you mean a specfic process has a 100% CPU usage?
Beta. Software undergoes beta testing shortly before it's released. Beta is Latin for 'still doesn't work.'

TonyD

No.  When I hit Control-Alt-Delete and click on the Performance Tab, the CPU is running at 100% and staying there.  The computer is SUPER SLOW.  I have to wait forever to get anything done.

SpyDie

When it is super slow (I guess it is super slow all the time?), bring up the Task Manager like you have been, and click the 'Processes' tab. Could you please tell me what are the top three processes that are a) using the most CPU and b) using the most memory (the most amount under 'Mem Usage')
Beta. Software undergoes beta testing shortly before it's released. Beta is Latin for 'still doesn't work.'

TonyD

The most CPU:  System idle Process, iexplore.exe, and taskmgr.exe
The most mem Usage:  iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, and svchost.exe

SpyDie

Sorry I forgot to ask you how much each of these is using?
Beta. Software undergoes beta testing shortly before it's released. Beta is Latin for 'still doesn't work.'

TonyD

CPU:
System Idle Process from 88-97
iexplore.exe 03
taskmgr.exe 02

Mem Usage:
iexplore.exe 30,044K
explorer.exe 22,548K
svchost.exe 11,100K

Also the slow thing just started last night.

SpyDie

Well the figure that is shown for System Idle Process is generally the opposite. That process simply shows what isn't being used. It means that anything from 88-97 isn't being used. Really, if you look at the Performance tab you'll see that the amount shown for the System Idle Process added together with that 'CPU Usage' on the 'Performance' tab should equal 100% - although something isn't right (somewhere!) if you constantly see 100% being used in the 'Performance' tab & the computer is running slow. Did you get a replacement USB Hub card or not?

How much RAM do you have and what is your processor's speed? To find this out click Start > Control Panel > System. It'll automatically open on the 'General' tab. On this General tab you'll see the amount of RAM & the processor speed (and make/model). The processor speed will be in either GHZ or MHZ. Thanks. :)

TonyD

No, I did not replace the USB hub card.
1 GB of RAM
1.79 GHz
Compaq/Intel Pentium 4
running Windows XP SP2

SpyDie

Hmmm...could you please Click Start > Control Panel > System >  click the 'Hardware' tab > click 'Device Manager'. Can you see any entries there that have a yellow sign or a red X beside it?

Hmm well ok...when was the last time you ran a ScanDisk and a Defrag? Another possiblity is it could be overheating. Could you please download and install SpeedFan?

Once installed, launch it. Leave your computer alone for a few minutes so that it is idle. Note down all the information in the second box (that has the temperatures).

After a few minutes, go and do something on it - for example go and browse the internet so that the CPU starts to work again. As you are doing this, keep an eye on the temperatures. Write down the temperatures while you are working on the computer. Please post both sets of information.

Also in SpeedFan, click the 'S.M.A.R.T' tab. Click the dropdown menu and select your main hard drive. Hit the button that says 'Perform in-depth online analysis of this hard disk'. On the page that opens, look for something simliar to this:

QuoteThe overall fitness for this drive is 93%.
The overall performance for this drive is 93%.

Please post the results of it. Please do it the same again with any other drives listed (I'm guessing for you, you'll have two drives listed, so do this for both).

Also, with your external USB hard drive, does it get recognized and show up in My Computer, or not even that?
Beta. Software undergoes beta testing shortly before it's released. Beta is Latin for 'still doesn't work.'

TonyD

Ok, here we go...
For the temperatures:
Idle was Local 44C and Remote 69C
Working/Browsing was Local 49C and Remote 84C

Overall Fitness was 92%
Overall Performance was 92%

Just one drive listed.
Yes, My Computer recognizes the External Drive.
The last time I ran ScanDisk and Defrag was about 2 months ago.

Corrine

Hi, TonyD.  Just a quick question -- did you recently update Webroot's SpySweeper to the latest version (5.0.5 (build 1286)?

TonyD

No.  I had it last year and it created so many problems that I uninstalled it.
