XBoard and WinBoard
XBoard and WinBoard are graphical user interfaces for chess. They display a chessboard on the screen, accept moves made with the mouse, and load and save games in Portable Game Notation (PGN). They serve as front-ends for many different chess services, including:

Chess engines that will run on your machine and play a game against you or help you analyze, such as GNU Chess, Crafty, or many others. A list of compatible engines is available.

Chess servers on the Internet, where you can connect to play chess with people from all over the world, watch other users play, or just hang out and chat. A list of compatible servers is available.

PGN viewer. You can use XBoard or WinBoard as a viewer and creator for game files recorded in PGN (standard chess notation).

XBoard runs on Unix systems, while WinBoard runs on 32-bit Windows systems including Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, 2003, ME, and XP

If you win a game please report to that. It's almost sent me into retirement. It's extremely well programmed.

Special note to consider: It DID! make a mistake and gave me the Queen one game in 50 (Ha Ha), but that
excitement was short-lived as i made an equal dumb move and gave it right back, losing the game.

I yet to win one in 2 weeks, but getting close. Anyone will love the challenge as it must evaluate all spaces and draw from the
highest percentage moves. LoL

 :D  Hi Easter :

Being an "Expert"-level chessplayer who has played on Pogo, Yahoo, The Zone, etc I visited
the "Tim Mann org " site via your link; however, I could not determine what "It's extremely
well programmed" consists of and how I could access what you played against and "test" it
against my skills !? Any suggestions ?

Gladly!  :)  After installation open the Winboard program by clicking on the BLACK KNIGHT icon, then Place a dot in the first circle you see in this box (should appear just as you see it in this screenshot), then click OK and your all set: By default you are WHITE and the
computer opponant is BLACK: (you can change that under options).

ENJOY!!!!   :welcome:

:D Thanks to EASTER's help, I was able to download & install the WinBoard program. However, I had
a little difficulty locating the "WinBoard Startup" menu until I clicked my "All Programs", then clicked
"WinBoard". Then I had around 10 shortcuts to chose from and for me I got that "Startup" menu
when I clicked the appropiate WHITE KNIGHT icon. Then I started a 5 min/player game which I
lost, since that time limit is too fast for me. I then discovered how to configure the program's time
limit & changed it to 15 min/player. The computer & I played even for around 24 moves when it
suddenly started giving away pieces & I mated it several moves later. The "Majestic Chess" software
I got at a Goodwill Computer store for $4 plays tougher & that software contains a "Chess
Aventure" which is a teaching guide for chess. I have already deleted about 6 Winboard icons.

bug under rug Heh. For me it gave me the Queen. Ha Ha

But it's been tanning my hide ever since.  :tease:

:D I will admit I had to consult my specialist Chess Openings book(s) to get to that 23rd move of the
game in a somewhat equal position; ironically the 1st piece the computer "gave" away was its
Queen. "Herbalist" & I have contacted each other by Yahoo IM and we met in a Yahoo Chess
room for a friendly game a while back.
