Brazil is the most successful national football team in the world ... five World Cup victories (including the most recent tournament). Brazil has qualified for each of the 18 World Cup finals (the only nation to have done so), and has a record 60 wins out of 87 games.
Ronaldo, Robinho, Ronaldinho, Kaká, Adriano, Dida, Cafu, Lúcio, Roberto Carlos ... the list goes on.
The English invented football, the Brazilians perfected it.
-
So did ya get the tickets Diehard? Or did I miss it somewhere? Usually I fall asleep with just the mere mention of "sports" hehehehe. ZzzzZzzzZZzzz huh what? eh eh-hem...there I go again...I hope I didn't snore too loud! :tease:

Ronaldo, Robinho, Ronaldinho, Kaká, Adriano, Dida, Cafu, Lúcio, Roberto Carlos ... the list goes on.
Including my favorite, Palea.
A college friend (Ukrainian, born in Brazil) was an incredible soccer player. I loved watching Andrij's sissors kick, but the best ever was watching him completely horizontal to the ground and head the ball into the goal -- especially when it was the winning goal.

Pelé's real name was Edson Arantes Do Nascimento ... 8)
Pelé played in four World Cups with Brazil's National Team. In 1958, at the age of 17, he scored six goals, including two in the championship game to help Brazil win its first World Cup 5-2 over Sweden. He almost missed the games because of a knee injury.
Wasn't your friend from Argentina? :tease:
-
Darn -- you posted while I was editing. Guess I won't bother editing now. :D
Yes, Andrij was from Argentina and I meant Pelé. Its hard to get soccer facts straight while eating chocolate.

Ha ha ha ............. :Win73:
3-0 , it´s a disgrace.None of the Swedish players were at their usual standard, they acted like a bunch of junior players on a training camp.
Best player on the field, with no competition, was Robbie Keane.

Die Hard, after Sweden won the gold medal in the Olympics, what more can Sweden ask for?
-
Die Hard ..Man of the Match Damien Duff’s first goal well that was a deflection by a Swedish player in to his own net.
The second goal by Tottenham Hotspur striker Robbie Keane, captaining the side for the first time it was different just two minutes into the second half with a super right-foot volley following a defence-splitting pass from Ian Harte.
The best, though, was reserved for Leeds United midfielder Liam Miller given time and space in embarking on a run from the halfway line before despatching a clinical right-foot shot from 25-yards beyond the flailing Andreas Isaksson.
I know Sweden are a good side, I am sure they will be a lot better than this at the World Cup.
So bring on the world cup in Germany in June I for one will be supporting Sweden. :gwave:
Paddy..

That was great. The hockey-team came to to Stockholm on monday. There had built a stage on one of the major squares where they recieved the cheers from the people.
I took my two youngest sons and went there to salute them.
Even the female hockey team was there, celebrating their silver medal:

Google is amazing ...
There was a 2001 movie entitled "Never Say Never Mind: The Swedish Bikini Team"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0302855/
A "Girl Power" action comedy to rival James Bond and Austin Powers ... :D
-
I have to grab my hands of a copy of this film, the plot sounds amazing and most thrilling:
NEVER SAY...NEVER MIND, the SWEDISH BIKINI TEAM find themselves in London at BUCKINGHAM PALACE receiving British Orders of Chivalry. But first, they must locate and destroy a copy of the infamous Los Alamos hard drive. Meanwhile, HELGA is missing in action in AMAZONIA and gets her Damehood in absentia. The other TEAM MEMBERS think that their next stop will be a leisurely yacht cruise and an appearance at the International Bikini Team Federation (IBTF) Open, where they will be judging the contest. Little do they know that intrigue, adventure, portable nuclear devices, a mutant yeast strain and danger in high places awaits.
Die Hard :)
-
The mutant yeast strain sounds like quite a test for our heroines ... :D
"The SBT are trained in close quarters combat, improvised weapons and modern tactical warfare methods by the extremely secretive CSD, the Covert Situations Division of the Swedish Military. They’re certified master divers and also qualified as a UDT, Underwater Demolition Team and have worked in conjunction with the British SAS, Special Airborne Service, and a United States Marine Recon team."

Nude worm tempts World Cup fans
"Football fans are being warned about a malicious worm that uses world Cup themed e-mails to infect Windows PCs."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/technology/5103414.stm
-
All right all you football fans here is a question for you.
Who won the FIRST ever football World Cup?
And please think before you post.
I want the team name and not just the country!!!
-
Uruguay ... Campeonato Mundial Burugua
-
This may surprise you but the answer is no.
I mean the FIRST ever World Cup, it was held a long time before Uruguay won it. When they won, it had been taken over by what I think was FIFA or something similar.
You should have known it would not be that easy.
-
That was before my time ... :hysterical:
Off I go to research this ... :breakkie:

"The Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy was a football (soccer) competition that took place in Turin, Italy in 1909. It is sometimes referred to as The First World Cup.
Italy, Germany and Switzerland sent their most prestigious professional club sides to the competition, but The Football Association of England refused to be associated with it and declined the offer to send a team. Not wishing to have Britain unrepresented in the competition, Lipton invited West Auckland FC, an amateur side from the north-east of England and mostly made up of coal miners, to take part. West Auckland won the tournament and returned to Italy in 1911 to defend their title. In this second competition, West Auckland beat Juventus 6-1 in the final, and were awarded the trophy outright."

More thoroughly discussed here: http://www.rsproductions.co.uk/tv/firstworldcup/
-
Well done winchester73, that was easy wasn't it!!!.
So next time someone goes on about England only winning it once you can say no they have won it 3 times.
Actually that trophy was kept in a cabinet in the local Working Men's Club until it was stolen. I come from that area originally and the story of it is well truly engrained in local folklore lore.
-
I stumbled upon it ... maybe by reading tea leaves? Lipton tea, of course ... :gwave:

Germany v Portugal play today to decide on third place. Both teams each receive $17.5 million, according to FIFA.
Italy v France tomorrow for the championship.
The World Cup champion receives $19.9 million, with the runner-up getting $18.25 million.
-
geese, for that kind of $ you think they could get qualified refs!!!!
i think they got some of the crew from the NFL reject list of refs !
maybe "instant replay" or 20/20 vision should be required
i can think of a few players that are eligible for a academy award for best acting in action adventure
