search is worthless
« on: January 07, 2009, 02:41:41 AM »
google, yahoo, any of 'em.  worthless.
where is the information?   :thud:

try this search for example -
gimme a list of all the street names in any city
gimme a list of all the addresses in a city (not street-name specific) like this number (1234)
no results.
pa-lease, don't even suggest such worthless repositories of rotting carp as whitepages or yellowpages.  my estimate is 85% of their phone nrs are wrong.

why does the internet exist?  certainly not to disseminate information.

ps
if you can figure a way to resolve either of those searches, lemme know...

Well according to this idiot collection agency jerk that keeps calling my fax number looking for someone I have never heard of, if it says so on the internet then it has to be correct!
Yes at some time in history some person, unknown to me, was the owner of the number that is now my dedicated fax number, that said person has apparently been very bad and not paid some debts, hence the collection posse is on their trail.  My fax machine rings about 50 times a day, night and day and all weekend, with 95778594757 collection people looking for said person.
I have taken the fax off the number and started answering it and explicitly told them I now own this number it is a dedicated fax number and they will never find their culprit at my number, but the response is still a very rude well it says so on the internet and that has to be right!

UM no it does not have to be right no one bothers to go out there and fix the errors in phone books! They just keep on spreading them.

I feel your pain LOL  I am now to the point of having to change my fax number.
and to top that off my main phone number is still being printed in all phone books and online as belonging to the previous owner and ME at the very same time, quite interesting.

PLEASE  You must stop doing Google searches NOW!!!!
You are destroying the environment!!

Read this:  http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,479127,00.html

Research Reveals Environmental Impact of Google Searches

Performing two Google searches from a desktop computer can generate about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle for a cup of tea, according to new research.

While millions of people tap into Google without considering the environment, a typical search generates about 7g of CO2. Boiling a kettle generates about 15g.

“Google operates huge data centers around the world that consume a great deal of power,” said Alex Wissner-Gross, a Harvard University physicist whose research on the environmental impact of computing is due out soon. “A Google search has a definite environmental impact.”

Google is secretive about its energy consumption and carbon footprint. It also refuses to divulge the locations of its data centers. However, with more than 200m internet searches estimated globally daily, the electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions caused by computers and the internet is provoking concern. A recent report by Gartner, the industry analysts, said the global IT industry generated as much greenhouse gas as the world’s airlines - about 2% of global CO2 emissions.

I think from now on I will get into my SUV and drive to the library to do  my searches instead of using Google.  I want to save the environment.

I have just Googled "Alex Wissner-Gross" and got 2,120 hits. I went to his site at http://www.alexwg.org/ and saw that he has 14 links on his publications page that he wants people to click on.

Perhaps if we ban Environmental Researchers from publishing the results of pointless research then we won't have the need to undertake these unnecessary google searches and we can use our kettles for boiling water and reduce our carbon footprint!
