96 people went to watch a football match and never came home.  Perhaps 23 years later, we'll finally come closer to knowing the truth of what happened, and how big the cover-up was ...

After all the mental torture those families had to go through, I think an apology is 26 years too late.
But what punishment can be given?

Tomorrow marks the 26th year of the fight for truth and justice, while standing shoulder to shoulder with the bereaved and the survivors of Hillsborough.

Liverpool FC and Everton FC captains Steven Gerrard and Phil Jagielka will release 96 balloons from Anfield to mark the 26th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.  Steven Gerrard's cousin Jon Paul Gilhooley, 10, was the youngest victim of the tragedy.

A minute’s silence is due to be held at the service and across the city at 3.06pm – the time the match was stopped on April 15, 1989.



Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne shows support for the Hillsborough campaign after they unveiled a banner at their home match against Lille last month.

It read: "Hillsborough, 25 years of lies...Justice for the 96!"

It's now in the hands of the jury ...

"The proceedings began on 1 April 2014 and, at 276 days of evidence, the inquests have been by far the longest case ever heard by a jury in British legal history."

28 years ... for the first time this anniversary will pass without a HFSG memorial service at Anfield.

“This is a day of special significance for the LFC family; in fact it is a day of significance for the whole of football, but us more so. We will of course mark the occasion as a team, this is important. I know, at the wish of the families, this is the first year where the service does not take place at Anfield but that doesn’t mean we won’t stop and remember in an appropriate manner.

There is a memorial at Melwood, with the names of the 96 people who lost their lives on 15 April 1989. We, as a team, will pause, show our respect and remember them on this day. For the victims, the families of those who died and the survivors, their story will always be our story. Their memory and the spirit of those who fought for them long after their deaths, will always be a reason for inspiration and hope, as well as sorrow.”

33rd Anniversary

The original banner with the number 96 has been updated to reflect the death of Andrew Devine, who last July was ruled by a coroner to be the 97th person unlawfully killed as a result of the disaster.
