Memorial Day (Decoration Day) 2014
« on: May 24, 2014, 12:59:28 AM »
This from a special friend, Mitch, the PhantomPhixer:

Mitch said that this was written by a marine "sky pilot" around 1967  ( Chaplin)

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press

It is the soldier, not the poet,
Which has given us freedom of speech

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate

It is the soldier who salutes the flag
Who serves beneath the flag, and
Whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protesters to burn
the flag.

I saw this in a airforce magazine around 67 and carried it in my wallet for years, re typed it and still carry it today.  I am glad that the military gets respect now, no one wants to die but some will do it so you can exercise your rights.

I was at the old Sacramento greyhound buss terminal waiting to get my duffel bag and wearing my class A uniform so i could get a flight discount to Los Angeles and catch a bus home. Well a nice Fine Upstanding College Kid exercised her right of free speech by spitting on me and calling me a "baby burner".  I was trembling like a leaf with anger and controlled myself and did not hit her but 47 years later I constantly ask myself if I did the right thing by not hitting her !

Sgt. D. Mitchell

Yes, Sargent Mitchell, you did the right thing.  To you, Mitch, and my Ghostly friend, thank you for everything!

I can still remember the first parade I went to that had Viet Nam Veterans marching.  They received a standing ovation the entire route of the parade.  I hope they felt redeemed for the disrespect they and you received during that era.

May the wind sing to you and the sun rise in your heart.

For my buddy mitch, the Phantom Phixer, who kept the F4s flying. Hit my smoke, mate. We remember ...

Freedom is not free.  All gave some, some gave all.  Honor and remember those who paid the ultimate price, and be grateful for their sacrifice.

"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own. And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind."

Major Michael Davis O'Donnell
1 January 1970
Dak To, Vietnam

Mike was shot down a few short months later, on March 24, 1970.  He was attempting to extract 8 members of MACV-SOG LRRP RT Pennsylvania, 14 miles inside Cambodia in Ratanokiri Province, after they declared a Prairie Fire.  "You take them in - you get them out!".

Listed as KIA February 7, 1978 (Presumptive Finding of Death).  Remains repatriated on April 12, 1995.  Came home to Arlington National Cemetery on August 16, 2001.
