New U.S. Postal Rates
« on: May 03, 2008, 10:18:30 PM »
Hi All:

USA Only, new postal rates go into effect 12 May 08.  A basic letter/bill will then cost  ¢.43 , up one penny.

http://www.usps.com/prices/welcome.htm?from=bannercommunications&page=prices

I will tell you that I order stamps on line, they charge $1.00 to get them to you, usually takes a week.  I have no place I can get stamps that cost less than a $1.00 in gas.  Plus no lines to wait in.

Again?!?  I just bought a roll of 42 cent stamps in December.  I asked for the forever-stamp (the ones that are just first class no matter what the rate) and they "weren't available"...

I hate 2 cent stamps... now I hate one-cent stamps.

I tried to buy a roll of Forever stamps last week.  The clerk said they don't make them in rolls, only in the 20 count book.  I asked why ... he said, the Post Office doesn't want to make the Forever stamp too easy to load up on.  If the stamps came in rolls, it would be quite easy to stockpile them.  Makes sense ...

That said, isn't the new rate going to be 42 cents?

They've made forever stamp rolls.  If the clerk is telling you that, then they must have stopped.  Horraz.

Right now it's 41 cents.  New rate is 42 cents.  I went off the amount posted above and just took one cent off in claiming my roll's stamp values.  Looking directly at the stamps, they are in fact 41 cents.

Just make it 50 cents and leave it there for a while.  But we can't do that.  The postal service is non-profit, and the catalog mailers would go nuts.

You are correct. New rate is 42 cents.

 :hysterical:

The post office is caught in a downward spiral.  They have to raise the rates, which lowers the volume of mail, which lowers revenue, which leads to an increase in rates, and so forth.  I've noticed most of my mail now is junk flyers, catalogs, political flyers, etc.  More and more people pay bills via computer, download statements via a website, etc.  The post office has less and less "valuable" mail to deliver.

I have told my postal person, Don, I don't need my mail delivered 6 days a week. Two days a week would be fine with me.

How many of us need mail delivered 6 days a week?  OK, business maybe, but I think the "average guy" 2-3 times a week would be enough.

That is a great suggestion, BG!  At the very least, drop Saturday residential deliveries.  Another alternative would be cutting deliveries to 3 days/week, dividing up the area like the trash removal companies do.  You live on XYZ Street and your mail delivery is Monday, Wednesday, Friday.  If you live on ABC Street, your mail delivery is Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.  That cuts fuel and vehicle maintenance too.

Ahhh, but then I wouldn't get my Sweepstakes and "Guaranteed Winner" envelopes six days a week.

Glad you liked my idea  Corrine :mitch:  Probably would be better to do it by "Zip" codes than street names.  Don't want them driving down "A" street to get to "X" street. "Fuel and vehicle maintenance "would down, so would the employee numbers.  That would not sit well with the union.

I figured it up....I get about 12 legitimate pieces of mail a month, bills/checks, the rest is snail mail spam. Since this is probably most of their business, let the junk mailers pay the increased costs.

What about when they send my next jury summons?  I personally don't want to wait for "my turn" before receiving it.  The sooner I have it in my hands, the better.

Yes, that's one example, one that I can think up off the top of my head.  What other things come in the mail that, while rare, need to be received sooner rather than later?

Things like jury summons are sent well in advance.  They have to be so that people can make arrangements for time off work.  (Note to self:  Remind Aaron in two years to watch for a jury summons.  :D  )

I agree that Zip Codes makes more sense, BG.  As to the decrease in Government employees, that could also be handled by attrition.  It would take time to set up/tweak a system like that.  There would have to be employees assigned specifically to businesses, including "rovers" for areas where there are businesses tucked in residential areas.

i saw this elsewhere.
why use email?

i send a letter to dad.
he gets it in three days.
he reads it and writes back.
i get it back in three days.
less than a week has gone by.

i send an email requesting information from a company.
after a series of tele-conferences,
i get my info/quote back in a week.

what's the difference?
