Title: Party Talk . . .
Post by: Corrine on July 10, 2006, 08:51:00 PM
There's small talk and there's party talk.  Seeing as how the  :hammy: 's are flowing pretty steadily, its time for some "party talk"!

Tell us something about yourself.

You're a bit quiet this evening, friends.  Well, I'll start then.

This is something I discovered tonight.  I really did not think our family are "pack rats" but I have been proven wrong.  My husband has been cleaning out the "barn" (its really a large shed for the pool filter/heater, garden tools, etc. but we call it a barn 'cause it looks like a small barn).  Anyway, back to the story -- he is taking everything out of the barn so he can do some repair work on the heater (or more likely remove it since it is very old).  So this evening when I went out the back door to the patio where he has moved everything to the barn, I nearly stumbled over a bag near the door.  Now this is where I've decided we really are "pack rats".  You'll never guess what was in that old grocery bag stashed somewhere deep in the "barn".  It was a bag of stones -- not pretty stones but dried up muddy stones.  Why in heavens name have we been storing a bag of muddy stones?

i know the feeling

a year ago i decided to turn one of the bedrooms into a office
well i have my office and the computer and goodies are out of the living room now,
but the spare bedroom is now a spare bedroom and storage room.
i threw away all i could ( don't think i will ever use a black and white monitor or commodore 128 computer , or a 28K external modem)

now the spare bedroom/;storage room  has
a king sized bed in a room 9 X11,the back seat from my SUV, and several computers and misc stuff stacked about 5 ft high all the way up ! so if anyone ever needed to use that room it would take me two days and would have the office full !

so giving it a lot of thought i think all i did was move things around a bunch. or i like to think when the lights go out it breeds more "valuable stuff"

Want to know something about me?... something I would'nt tell anyone else?...  (they would see it anyways...) something I'm not proud of?... OK, here it is:

I look after my grand-kids over the summer.  My 9 year old boy is very impetuous and tends to dare danger instead of using a bit of wisdom. Last wednesday, he wanted to go to the big public swimming pool a few blocks from here but there is a main street with lots of traffic to go across to get there... and I said I would take him there... but I had lend my car to my son because his was very ill... my scooter had a dead battery... so I used a kiddy 4 inch wheels scooter and accompanied him (on his bike). Well, I was on a pretty steep downhill... and it started going way too fast... and suddenly the front wheel of the scooter hit a crack in the pavement and the front wheel locked in perpendicular... and I went flying on the curb....
I now look like a battered woman and I did it all by myself. Oh! and the mouth full of what I thought was gravel?... well, they were a dentist's blessing in disguise, I found out later...!
But my grand-son is safe!
My status has changed too... now the grand-kids come to look after me over the rest of the summer apparently... so they say!!!
I also made the solemn promise that I will no longer scoot and I even voluntered to no longer roller blade either.
Seems like at 63 I can count myself lucky to walk!
But my grand-son is safe!  Ah! ah!

At least you made some history!

You know what they say about well behaved women...they don't make history!

What can I share with you about myself?  Well, I don't know alot about skunks.

Not often, but sometimes a skunk or 2 travels thru the neighborhood back yards...and have even sprayed my neighbor's dog a few times.  Usually I just grab a few potatoes and whip 'em at them and they run away.  I figure a potato won't injure them too bad, just scare them off.

The other morning early I look out and see a baby skunk...no momma, just baby, coming right up to my back deck.  So here I go thinking... I can take on this baby one face to face...potatoes seemed too cruel.  I'll just jump out there and my sheer size will scare the little guy off and he won't dare come back. :hysterical:

Out the back door I jump and onto the dew saturated lawn, arms flailing, screaming like a banshee, and running right for him!!  Good sound plan wouldn't ya say?  WRONGO!

My expectation was as I ran toward it...it would turn and run from me.  And as I see that it is NOT MOVING, I think I better STOP, and whoopsy daysy, out go my legs from under me on the wet grass, and I land right under it's nose! (https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg1.yoxio.com%2Fimg%2F239476.gif&hash=947e83af5fc3fd4a5d8716feac8700da)
Well that cute little critter starts a hissing and growling like I never knew could come outta such a baby. (https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg1.yoxio.com%2Fimg%2F237797.gif&hash=8329b22e4712b3a2d15a50d8d37b7bd9)

So now my arms are flailing again, except this time doing windmill circles backwards trying to get away from that bugger!  And he never did move from where he was firmly planted. :hysterical:

Long story short, I went back in the house and got some potatoes.

At least you didn't have to go back in the house and bathe in tomato juice (not that it really helps all that much).

a few years ago my room mate had a white dust mop for a dog. well he was so friendly he wanted to say HI to everything, he didn't just get sprayed, he got slimed !!! it was at 11 pm and we were going to bed, so she went into the shower and rinsed him off, i looked for tomato juce but could only find a jar of spagettie sauce and figured "close enough"

WRONG

they added food color to it so when she put it on the dust mop and let it sit for a bit we had a  PINK punk rocker dust mop for a few weeks ;-)

It isn't always Nutty Buddy Ice cream topping on the kitchen floor...it very well could be chicken poop. Therefore...do not eat "things" off of your kitchen floor; it isn't always as clean as you think it is.

I know this belongs in Drinks Stash, but here's a drink to consider for the occasion.

Opera House Special (a real drink btw)

1 shot Tequila
1 shot Gin
1 shot White rum
1 shot Vodka
1 part Pineapple
1 part Orange
1 part Sour Mix

Now for those that aren't into opera, and you have occasion to get dragged to one,
mix the above drink, comsume it one hour before the opening act I...
and you might just enjoy it!  :hysterical:

I have 3 stages of one particular part of my life to share.

STAGE 1

OK, way back when, I'm almost finishing up college, and an annual tradition starts.  I'm younger, stronger, and caraazier...those stories are always longer  :D

I'm kindofa 4 star hotel gal at heart, even if I don't always have the  :2cents: :2cents: for one.  But I do love nature, and camping is the way to go for that.
We have an area in the northern part of my state that butts up to the Canada border called the BWCA/Boundary Waters Canoe Area.  Restricted to non-motorized vehicles/boats...is one of the protected areas of our planet, like other's around the globe, that are spectacular to experience

Slap a backpack on, throw your canoe over your shoulders, and you are hiking into the wilderness, portaging from land mass to land mass, paddling your way in between thru a series of many small lakes, with 10 good friends for many years in a row.

I am a 5ft 4 (short) 100lb (lightweight) person, and when it came to returning to the canoe after hiking a bit, you remove your back pack and place it toward the center of the canoe (don't want it to tip.)

For me, being the brawny person that I am  it was easier to start a pendulum swing with the pack, and let it drop carefully into the canoe.  That worked for me!

Story continues.  I'm on the first of many trips to come, at the edge of the water, swinging my pack, as we had just place our canoes back in the water, on the 6th portage.  Unbeknown to me at as to what a bog is, or that I am standing on one...

(bog=Sphagnum moss grows out from the edge of the bog in tangled mats strong enough to support trees, shrubs, and even people...barely. Jump up and down on a quaking bog and trees 25 feet away bounce along with you. Jump too hard and your leg may plunge through into the brown water below.  http://octopus.gma.org/katahdin/bog.html (http://octopus.gma.org/katahdin/bog.html) )

and on my last pendulum swing up with the backpack, the "bog" gives way  and I find myself submersed under 6 ft of water!!!!   :hysterical: :hysterical:
There IS something special about being out in nature.
Title: Re: Party Talk . . .
Post by: Ripley on July 17, 2006, 12:48:04 AM
STAGE 2 (few more years pass)

And the kids join us on our annual trip:

(https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi71.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi152%2Fripley2006%2Fa577b70f.jpg&hash=dd7eaa2f30b8bef497ce5a01c8ed88fd)
Title: Re: Party Talk . . .
Post by: Ripley on July 17, 2006, 12:57:30 AM

STAGE 3

Not as young, strong, or caraazy as I used to was.  I found out I could continue this annual trek, without the mosquitos, gnats, bears, heavy backpacks/canoes to carry...nor bogs to watch out for  :hysterical: on a "virtual" trip, with the miracles of technology!
I DO love computers!

Now before you click on this link (always THINK before you click on a link)...an explanation.

This first page is fluff, but it I am starting you out with this link :

http://www.quietjourney.com/index.html (http://www.quietjourney.com/index.html)
cuz they play the sound of a loon bird when the opening page loads...

(party talk) a familiar, favorite sound to hear when you are camping in this area.

Once there, click on the guy paddling the canoe icon, for the "virtual trip"

There are a few 360 panaorama's (short java applets...so hopefully you have removed your old java and have the updated to Java 1.5.0_07)...the sunset ones are

But when ya got time, join me on Trip#1 (slide show) and you will share with me what I have seen many times on one of these "real" annual trips.
It doesn't even take too long on dial-up.

And a parting thought to leave with you all:
"If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracles of technology.  We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it."
-President Lyndon B. Johnson      on signing the Wilderness Act, 1964

Got their attention, eh? Those loon calls are a treat to hear   I think the only movie they were heard much in was that Jane Fonda/Henry Fonda one...On Golden Pond.
So you checked out a few sights of my annual camping destination...well, if you happen to know anyone living in Minnesota  you might want to ask and see if they have taken a trip up to the BWCA.  Even if they not the camping sorta person, it is a beautiful area to tour...for our state anyways

Except I did something goofy with it -- It was my first smilie addition.  I'm going to see if I can do a fixie-uppie.  :)

That should do it:

The BBCode now works:

Code: [Select]
:mitch:
If you hold the mouse over the smilie you'll see its name, "Mitch's Blue Balloon"

Save your tomato juice for your bloody mary's...  It doesn't work for skunk scent..
Having dogs in the field all the time where they get into everything, you have to be prepared for everything..

Luckly I haven't had to use it, but it is supposed to work... :mitch:

jamesk  :D

Nice find on the skunk stink remedy for pets!!!!!  I've forwarded the link on to my dog ppl,
and I saved a copy for myself.

But I think PREVENTION so you don't have to use that remedy...still say :muahaha:  whip a few of these taters (https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi71.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi152%2Fripley2006%2F66792c15.gif&hash=0109921f0c1eab38905c4dac178a266f)(https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi71.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi152%2Fripley2006%2F66792c15.gif&hash=0109921f0c1eab38905c4dac178a266f)(https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi71.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi152%2Fripley2006%2F66792c15.gif&hash=0109921f0c1eab38905c4dac178a266f)(https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi71.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi152%2Fripley2006%2F66792c15.gif&hash=0109921f0c1eab38905c4dac178a266f) at 'em when they are seen in your yard  :hysterical:

And seeing how I'm not the best aim, even tho I peppered our yard w/ quite a few one time, the next AM they were all gone...eaten by some other critters.

But it is best to attempt intimidation from afar...as I've learned  :hysterical:

if you have any deer in the area i bet they enjoyed the "taters ;-)

next time you go "family camping" put the potato peels a distance from the campsite. and during the night you will find out how graceful deer at night ;-)))))  you will think you are about ready to be mugged by a herd of wild Buffalo, and find it is one doe ;-D
