Record snow fall
« on: March 09, 2008, 12:36:18 AM »
Hi all from a very snow bound central Ohio.

We set a new record for snow during a 24 hour period, today.  20.4 inches.  The previous record was 15 inches, I think it was 1910.
This will be forever known as the Blizzard of 08.  Last Blizzard was 78.  (Boy do I remember that one.  Spent about 3 days out in it, helping rescue people)

Needless to say, I have spent a lot of time trying to keep our driveway open.  Really don't know why, as our street is impassable.
No mail was delivered, which means it is bad out there.

I know some of you are used to these types of snow fall, Columbus is not.  6 inches of snow is hard to handle, as the city/county just doesn't have that much snow removal equipment.  Needless to say Columbus Ohio now is pretty much "Closed".

I think I will go back to work, maybe Tuesday.     The only reason to go out Monday would to be to get more  :Hammys pint:
I have a store I can walk to.

Power has not been a problem, so far.  I have a generator and a couple of natural gas heaters that do not require electric.

As long as the phone line does not go down, still have the puter.

Not shoveling much snow because I have been using a snow blower.  A neighbor threw it away a couple of months ago.  I put a new spark plug in it and runs great.

Not sure what the official stats are up here in Cleveland, Ohio, but we have to be around the same amount of snowfall as you.  I thought our furnace died last night, here the snow was so high it covered the exhaust and inlet pipes for the furnace.  Shoveled it out - at  2 in the morning - and we have heat :D

Oh my   that is a whopper of a storm.

Bless your Buckeye hearts!

Hopefully, your local weather forecasters gave you all some warning, but even then it's hard to imagine what 20+ in /52 cm in a 24 hour period can do to an area not accustomed to those amounts.

That comment made me smile...been there done that.  Depending on the wind direction, you could have had 3 foot drifts in that driveway to disperse, which is quite a feat, even with a snow blower.  Remember now, do some stretching/warmup before shoveling/snow blowing, and pace yourself!

And then they say 40's by Tuesday?  Yikes, let's hope the warmup isn't too fast or you gonna have some flooding potential.

Many yrs., March is the snowiest month in the upper midwest, however the snowfall amts where I am are way down. But even with the incredible resources of snow removal equipment & city planning for the Twin Cities during snow storms, those amounts are a challenge.

On the bright side, at least now you will have time to futz with your new hard drive (did it arrive given the weather?) /image backups you were working on.

You are in it too!?  Just what you wouldn't want...the furnace to go out.  Good on you for sorting the pipe thingys, even if it was at 2 AM.  The exhaustion probably won't set in for a while yet.

Take care BG, Clark76, and those hammered by this storm!  It will be a memory that will linger for many years.

March has certainly come in like a lion.  Let's hope it goes out like a lamb.

Following the ice storm (not as bad as predicted) Tuesday, it started snowing around 3 PM Friday.  The snow changed to a rather unpleasant mix of freezing rain and sleet.  As a result, the snowfall was between 12 & 18", depending on location.  Since I'm close to the lake, we got at least 18".

Fortunately, this area is better equipped to deal with the snowfall than our friends in Ohio.  The driveway is cleared, a path shoveled for the dogs and the sun is shining brightly.

They finally got one lane on our street opened up.   :gwave:  Normally takes 2-3 days after a snow for them to do the side streets.

If I did that, I would be too tired to shovel  My trashed picked snow blower did most of the work, but I am still tired.  Had to do some of it by hand. ( I do have other snow blowers, one is a big one, but I took it apart about 5 years ago. One of these days I will fix it)

GR@PH;<'S - as Ripley said, be careful, between me, Clark76 and  Corrine we have a life time supply of "ammo"

Clark76 - Good job on figuring out your heat problem.

Called my boss, told him I was not coming in tomorrow....He said fine.  With my job, I get when I want to, leave when I want to and when I get done I come home. I have no set schedule, I come and go as I please.
