Use Verizon Wireless? Think About Opting Out
« on: October 15, 2007, 06:13:10 PM »
I mentioned this on my blog (yes, shameless plug), but I feel it important to share here.  Verizon Wireless is opting in their customers with regards to sharing their Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) with affiliates, agents, and parent companies (including Vodafone) and their subsidiaries.  This includes numbers you called, numbers that called you, how long you talked, and what additional services you purchase.

Verizon Wireless is providing notice to opt out in their wireless bills.  If you want to opt out, you have 30 days from when you receive the CPNI Notice to opt out.  To opt out, call 800-333-9956.  You'll have to opt out every number on your account one at a time; there is no blanket opt out all of them option.

Thought you should know.

Good to spread that around.  I opted out on all four lines of my family plan.

I wonder why they didn't just have those who wanted ads to opt in?   :hysterical:

I really think the FTC should have instituted a "Please Call Me" list for folks to "opt in", rather than the "Do Not Call" list that we had to sign up for.  They would have a lot fewer numbers to deal with.

Under the Federal Communications Commission's rules, companies must allow customers to keep their personal data, like information on who they called and for how long, inaccessible to other parts of the same company. And companies must periodically notify subscribers of that right with notices like the one Verizon has been sending out.

In response, customers can tell Verizon Wireless, which is a joint venture, not to share information even with its two parent companies, Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) (VZ) and Vodafone Group PLC. (VOD) (VOD)

It is that kind of sharing - which could help Verizon Communications and Verizon Wireless send a single bill to joint customers or offer existing customers discounts for added services - that the notice addresses, said Verizon Wireless spokesman Jeffrey Nelson.

"It doesn't mean we're providing data to third-party advertisers, and it would be illegal to do so," Nelson said.
