Post by: DR M on March 23, 2021, 07:01:33 PM
"The entire world will turn Greek to mark Greece’s bicentennial, celebrated on March 25, 2021, commemorating 200 years since the declaration of its War of Independence."

The grand celebration of the 1921 centenary was “postponed” due to political and military circumstances.  Hopefully COVID won't impact this one ...

Thanks everyone for the comments.

@Paddy
I would prefer Meghan and Harry instead.   ;)

@Winchester
I didn't know about 1921!

@plodr
Ευχαριστώ! (Thank you). Actually it's "Ευτυχισμένη διακοσαετία".

Although you're celebrating 200 years of independence, it certainly seems that Greek history goes back much further than many people realize if Greek was been spoken and part of the Dead Sea Scrolls.  From Discovery of biblical scrolls shows importance of Greek Old Testament, scholar says (https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/discovery-of-biblical-scrolls-shows-importance-of-greek-old-testament-scholar-says-58629):

Quote
The new scrolls are believed to have been hidden by Jewish refugees who were forced to hide in the cave during the Bar Kokhba revolt, an uprising against the Romans which took place circa AD 132–136

Sure...

Greece is the country where Democracy was established, 5 centuries BC... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athenian_democracy

Today, in fact, marks the beginning of the Greek War for Independence, not the end. The war for independence started in 1821, after 400 years of slavery by the Ottoman Empire. https://greekcitytimes.com/2021/03/25/greek-independence-day-march-25/

Since Corrine posted the article above regarding Greek language, I provide here a link to the famous speech of Xenophon Zolotas. Zolotas was director of the Bank of Greece when he appeared in front of an audience at an  International Bank for Reconstruction and Development conference in 1959. He delivered two speeches in English using Greek words to emphasize the wealth of the Greek language and the fact that countless Greek words enrich English. https://greekreporter.com/2018/02/09/speaking-english-using-greek-flashback-to-zolotas-historic-speech/

You will find it interesting. Actually, you may speak Greek without knowing.  :D

P.S. Even the word corona (corona virus) is Greek. Corona means crown, and it was given to this virus because its similarity to a crown.

How did everything turn out celebration-wise?

Everything went fine.

It is really touching, seeing these celebrations, knowing the history behind, having in mind all those struggles for freedom... Also, very touching to see the leaders of other countries celebrating with the Greeks. My wish as a Greek Cypriot is freedom for Cyprus not take any longer...

This is the video of the parade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4RcIg5jbEc
