Got an email in my Hotmail account this morning, inviting me to click on some links.

From: Microsoft <msa@communication.microsoft.com>
Subject: Updates to our terms of use and privacy statement

The headers look legitimate.
The links look (sort of) legitimate - eg. https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=799609.

"Thunderbird" blocked remote content.
In an abundance of caution, I didn't click on anything.

Did anyone else get this? Is it legitimate?

It is legitimate. Microsoft did update the Services Agreement and I've seen elsewhere that others have received the notice of the update.

Paranoid - good. My husband is paranoid and doesn't even look inside an email that looks suspicious. (That's my job.)
Too many people click any link in any email before even thinking about what they are doing.

I originally set up my Hotmail account as a reliable spare. I seldom use it.
However, based upon the behavior of Windows 8.x and 10, I gathered that it's become my "Microsoft ID" (or whatever they're calling it these days).

Since I have Thunderbird set up to check it "on startup", it's a "Microsoft Service" that I'm using.

I got it as well. msa@communication.microsoft.com -- I also had a really suspicious pop up happen not long before that that looked like it came from Microsoft and all I remember about it was telling me not to leave the site or something like that. I freaked out and I did the Alt F4 thinking I was hacked.

I use Windows 7 and my Microsoft products are Office 2007. So, does this mean that if I don't sign the agreement I can no longer use them? It was all very scary and unexpected indeed to get an odd looking email in my Yahoo email and also a pop up. Thank you.

If you click on the links Corrine provided above, you'll see that they apply to the use of Microsoft consumer online products and services. I received an email covering Skype a few days ago.

You will be able to use Windows 7 and Office 2007 without any interruption.

I was using the word in jest, BUT...

There are so many banks, brokers, insurance carriers, government entities, & etc, that are constantly assuring you that they don't contact customers via email (and/or phone), and warning us not to respond to emails that appear to be from them, that it seemed strange to be getting an "official notice" from Microsoft, via email.

Although the headers, and the link, appeared legitimate, I'm aware that no matter how smart you think you are, somewhere there's a "badguy" that's smarter.
