We are considering additional features for adding into WinPatrol so that it can evolve with technology. We're always happy to hear suggestions.

The IE specific tabs are nearing their end of relevance as even Microsoft is desperately trying to kill off that browser.

Reporting on other browsers sounds interesting, but with the plethora of browsers that now exist reporting on such things could be challenging even with most of them being based on either Mozilla or Chrome.

Windows 10 continues to evolve, we will be updating how Start-up and delayed startup work in the next release because Microsoft has changed those quite a bit recently.

We are scouting around for new features.

When we purchased WinPatrol, we were a one person company and the sales of WinPatrol were not even enough to allow me to quit my fulltime job and run WinPatrol as a business.

Since that time we've released WinPrivacy and WinAntiRansom into the consumer market, the increased revenue allowed me to work fulltime in the company and bring on a couple of people. One of which, Scott is 100% dedicated to support of the products, including responding for forums like LandzDown. He doesn't let any post sit unattended.

Please understand that a lifetime license generates revenue only once, each subsequent support email and forum response eats away at that revenue. That is a dangerous business model, which is why we've branched out into an annual renewal based business product as well.
We inherited millions of customers when we purchased WinPatrol but none of the revenue those licenses generated. Debacles like Adobe creating a bogus start-up program in Dec 2014 right after release of Beta-1 for WinPrivacy and the initial Windows 10 upgrades last September that removed the WinPatrol Registration code generated many thousands of emails that all had to be handled and we handled them all.

Yes, we have not released an update to WinPatrol since 2015 and that is unfortunate, but prior to this hiatus we took the time to ensure WinPatrol was stable and worked well on all systems from Windows XP through Windows 10 and included support for Microsoft Edge.

WinPatrol is not dead, if it was, why would we have named our product for business "WinPatrol Enterprise" and why would I have recently hired Scott to answer emails and forum posts?

Please have a little patience, that patience will be rewarded with updates to WinPatrol PLUS.

Our servers recently suffered a denial of service attack from IPs' originating at Cincinnati Bell. The IP's were automatically blocked from accessing our site.
I'm wondering if maybe the malware that was installed on your computer was resulting in that attack or if you unfortunately ended up with the IP address post-rebuild.

Please respond to the email I sent to you and if that IP is being blocked I will open it back up again.

Hi Dan,

Good question.

I see that Gopher John already mentioned the program setting for the Tray Icon. That is the first place to look.

One thing to remember is Microsoft takes the liberty to remove icons from the tray and move them to the "overflow" icon area at their own discretion. You can access this from an up arrow looking icon just left of all visible icons. Scotty can end up in there.

If Scotty is nowhere to be found, then you need to do the following:
  • Open on the Options page.
  • Click the "Repair and Reset Tools..." button, located lower left.
  • Check the 3rd box from the bottom, "Check here if you have multiple or not Scotty icon in the System Tray."
  • Click Apply.
  • If you are prompted about changing this setting for "All Users", please select that option.
  • Chick Apply again

That's it. The tray icon should be fixed.

Making those icons "sticky" depends on the operating system you're running and believe it or not, Windows 10 actually behaves the best from what I've seen so far in actually doing what it is told when it comes to leaving the tray icons alone.

What I did on my Windows 7 computer (because Win 7 seemingly has a mind of it's own when it comes to the tray icons) was change the tray to always show ALL icons. Much like it did when the tray was first invented.
I do use a large, wide-screen monitor so there is plenty of space in the task bar for all of the icons.

If you right-click on the taskbar and select Properties it will open a dialog.
  • In that dialog, select "Customize..." for the Notification area.
  • For Windows 10, you need to click on "Select which icons to appear on the taskbar", located top right of the dialog that opened to open the edit dialog.
  • Select the top button, "Always show all icons in the notification area."
  • That's it.
  • For Windows 8... I apologize, but I accidentally upgraded my Windows 8 test computer to Windows 10 and am in the process of restoring it. So I don't have a write-up for that one at the moment, although I'll wager it is similar to Windows 10.
  • For Windows 7, when you click the Customize button a large dialog opens.
  • Located lower left is a checkbox, "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar". Check that if you want them always visible.
  • Click OK to exit and you're done.

Hi all I was pointed to this thread.

WinPatrol "should" prompt is the protected registry key is altered, unless it is a "Locked" key.
You can lock the key in the manner Corrine stated, by checking the box "Always protect this key. Do not alert me to changes."
You can also Lock/Unlock keys by right-clicking on one and selecting the appropriate option.

The key in question in this thread (and support emails) was not locked. Therefore, WinPatrol should have raised a message.

On my local computer and on our test computers registry monitoring works as expected. So, something odd is going on.

I just thought of this. Please check to see if all of the protected registry keys valid.
If not, please remove any non-existing keys. I've seen where this can result in the failure of WinPatrol to raise a prompt when a key is altered.

If are running an older version of WinPatrol for some reason and have the start-up program is defined using the -expressboot option, please remove it. V 33.6.2015.18 ignores that option because it's use resulted in many of the unwanted prompts and failure of prompts to be raised for registry key changes among other issues.

Worst case, I suggest removing all protected registry keys, restarting your computer and redefining them.

Also, we will be employing some of the newer technologies we're using in WinAntiRansom in WinPatrol in 2016. This will let us do a much more consistent job of monitoring registry keys as well as other changes.

At some point in time, someone used InstallMate to create an installer for some malware.
Ever since then, InstallMate has been suffering from false positive problems because many antimalware companies simply see a trace and label it malware w/o making the full determination if the true malware is installed.

I believe this is also why Symantec has a false positive on the WinPatrol installer every single release.

My apologies for the confusion.

WinPatrol Free version is not going away at the end of the month. I don't plan on ever having it go away.

What is going away is the ability to purchase "Lifetime" licenses, except my credit card processor has banned me from using that term, instead agreeing to "Subscription free".
If you already have a lifetime license (Subscription free), you will continue to receive free updates and support for your lifetime. That is what you purchased and that is what you'll get. Period.
Moving forward, however, we are changing the pricing of both WinPatrol and WinPrivacy to subscription based to ensure continuous improvements to both software and the PLUS database that runs behind them.

A small annual subscription fee is a reasonable thing to ask when in return you receive free support via email, look-up and return of lost licenses, product updates, PLUS data and new features. We have some nice ones on the drawing board. too. :)

I apologize to everyone for the confusion, most especially to Corrine and all the WinPatrol fans. Not briefing Corrine first was a major oversight on my part. Again, existing lifetime licenses will always be lifetime licenses. And as long as I'm in charge, we will also have a free version of both WinPatrol and WinPrivacy. Without those, why would we need the PLUS versions? ;)

Please do the following:
1. Delete the following file: C:\ProgramData\InstallMate\{6A206A04-6BC1-411B-AA04-4E52EDEEADF2}\setup.dat

Feel free to copy and paste the folder into Windows Explorer that is everything in the bold font.

2. Now you can run the uninstaller V33 w/o any issue if you'd like. For some reason our installer isn't laying down the correct setup.dat file.

If you want to try installing V33 again, it very well may work properly once that file is gone.
If not, you can download V32 from

We're working on the installer issue along with additional fixes to correct some persistent recurring alerts. Not sure when we'll have an update available quite yet, but it will within the next two weeks.

Having been in the source code and seeing how Bill wrote WinPatrol, I would have been surprised if WinPatrol didn't work well on Windows 10. But, it is great to have an independent source testing and verifying.

Corrine brought this thread to my attention. This is the first I've heard of this issue. At first I thought, I see RTF on my computer, so maybe it will be as simple as upgrading to V32. But, as I read on, I realized that is not the case.
I'm going to read through the thread again more closely and see if I can get a test machine to exhibit this behavior. It is always easier to fix something if you can get a repro.

I apologize about the problems with file types and will be working to discover what is happening. I will also be monitoring this thread, so if you find any additional information, please do not hesitate to post. From what I've seen and read in Bill's response to the initial posting, the posts are very thorough in describing what is happening. That should help.

Late yesterday we made some good progress on fixing some bugs we found in the delayed start code and will hopefully have a release soon that fixes the issues. Fixing this problem his been the main delay in getting out the next release, but with Bill's guidance we're getting there.

Hi Happy Bulldozer,

I just watched your video and have one observation. When you make a change in the registry from an external program and you have Regedit already open, you need to refresh the UI to see if those changes worked. I didn't hear any sound, so you may have been hitting F5 to refresh and I was unaware the refresh was taking place.

Since you can reproduce this consistently, may I ask you a few questions about your set-up?

Do you have any antimalware product running that may be preventing registry updates? If so, maybe check to see if it says anything about blocking a registry change.

Would you be willing to run a WinPatrol Log (located in the Options tab) and email it to me at If so, please copy and paste the results into an email, I am hoping that will help Bill and I track this down.
