Mozilla Firefox Version 56 Released with Security Updates
« on: September 28, 2017, 05:36:34 PM »
Mozilla sent Firefox Version 56.0 to the release channel today.  The  update includes two (2) Critical, six (6) High, seven (7) Moderate and  two (2) Low security updates.  Firefox  ESR was updated to version  52.4.0.

Important Notes:

  • Although version 56 is scheduled to "silently and forcibly  auto-upgrade" users running the 32-bit version  of Firefox on 64-bit  computers with more than 2GB of RAM to the 64-bit  version, it was not updated to the 64-bit version on my machine.
  • Users of  Lenovo's "OneKey Theater" software for IdeaPad laptops and users running Firefox for Windows over a Remote Desktop  Connection (RDP) are advised to check the unresolved issues in the Release Notes.
  • Version 56 makes Firefox Screenshots and Send Tabs available to all users.

I like the FireFox screenshots addition.   Seems to work pretty well.

A little buggy, or maybe just not intuitive.   If you click on  the frame that comes up when you hover the page after opening, it works fine.   However, if you try to draw out a box without doing that, you can't escape resizing mode.

I just discovered that in this latest update, I can no longer open my Juno webmail inbox links. Logging in and out is still possible.   Everything works fine in Chrome, so its definitely a FireFox issue.

I can't find any reports of it in my searches. Maybe I'm the last person on earth that uses Juno webmail or something.

Not a horrible problem, since I can still access the account on another browser.   I
have several frequent sites that FireFox misbehaves on. So this adds another one. :(

As I understand it, Netzero and Juno, differ in name only.
My Juno account was cancelled for "abandonment" years ago, but I don't have any problem with my Netzero account using FF 56.0 (64 bit).

You may have other issues.... For instance I had to tell NoScript to "Allow this site" to login.

I never did figure it out. It wasn't a NoScript issue.  But I found out I can use the inbox again after switching to the Classic view.  Apparently FireFox didn't like something about their updated view.

Actually I'm glad I had to switch back.  I didn't realize how annoying their "update" was.  Too many clicks to get to your messages . The classic view opens to your inbox list.  Easy peasy.

I have so many e-mail accounts, that I prefer to use an e-mail client, rather than visit each webmail site regularly. Bonus-I never see all the advertising and difficult interfaces that people are always complaining about.

I probably should set up the Windows Mail client.  But just one more thing to figure out...it never ends.

Quickly (as in 2 minutes) searching the web for client settings suggests Juno only supports POP3 connection protocol (how the email client talks to the email server) and no IMAP support. Translation: managing email across multiple devices can get 'interesting' when using POP3 rather than IMAP. You may find using the web interface to be better for you.

I can't speak about the Windows Mail client, and I haven't used Outlook or Outlook Express, in years, but "Thunderbird" gives POP users the option to "Leave Messages on server". You can specify a time period, or choose "until I delete them".

Mozilla sent Firefox Version 56.0.1 to the release channel today.  The update includes one fix and the migration to 64-bit Firefox for users of the 32-bit version.  Note the unresolved issues!

Firefox ESR was remains at version 52.4.0.

Mine didn't upgrade to 64-bit either with 56.0, but the new release 56.0.1 did silently and forcibly upgrade it.

What? We have no choice on the change from 32 bit to 64bit? That's outrageous.  The last time I checked into it, I chose to keep the 32 bit because there were big problems with 64x.  I think the deal killer for me was certain favorite extensions were not compatible.   Wonder what I will find this time.

No clue what big problems with 64 you are referencing, but this blog will explain the memory utilization difference: https://blog.mozilla.org/nnethercote/2016/07/22/firefox-64-bit-for-windows-can-take-advantage-of-more-memory/

That won't help me with memory useage, as my machine is at less than 4GB RAM.

Its been too long to remember what the problems were that scared me off, but the extension thing would have done it all alone.

Juno on the web it is.  Thanks Aaron.
