Postings by morons
« on: December 01, 2013, 05:10:02 PM »
I have noticed that occasionally, some sad people just register to post questionable content. (I am desperately trying to be polite about it!)... :smash:

Would it be a good idea if the first couple of posts of any "newcomer", have to be approved before they appear on the forum?
It is sad to have to resort to such a solution, but I can see no other way to stop this type of abuse.

I suspect that you're referring to the recent spam post by whitebirds.  Even though we have the StopForumSpam add-on installed, there are occasions such as this instance where the spammer hadn't been reported when they registered so their registration is completed.  As a result, when I receive the notice a new member, I check StopForumSpam and other databases.  You'd be surprised how many "new members" get rejected before they even have a chance to post.  As it turns out in the case of whitebirds, the username/IP hadn't been reported until I reported it when I removed the post.  http://www.stopforumspam.com/ipcheck/75.22.67.196

Any time you see a spam post, don't hesitate to click the "Report to moderator" link in the bottom right-hand corner of the post.

Thank you Corrine for the explanation.
Yes....you are correct. It seems that the same person posted the same message yesterday (if I remember correctly) under a different user name..(Sorry, I can't remember the user name used).

I wish people like that would find a different way to occupy themselves with....

More times than not, it is a bot that gets through the defenses.  Not long ago we were seeing a lot of new members registering around the same period of time each day from the same country, not listed in the SFS database and no posts were made.  Further investigation showed there would be spam links posted on their profile in their signature.  That problem was solved by changing the usergroup configuration for new members with 0 posts.
