AVG update causing severe problems for xp users
« on: November 11, 2008, 05:23:27 AM »
here are links to the thread on BBR and a blog article.
Severe problems with WinXP after AVG Antivirus marked “user32.dll” as “Trojan Horse PSW banker4″
About AVG FP Trojan PSW banker4, hitting user32.dll WinXP

this seems to be affecting those with AVG 7.5 and XP.

this was on one of the AVG forums
PC crash after AVG update

I believe there is  now update out but I know some folks have been affected badly so if you find someone wondering what happened to their pc this might be it.

I see Corrine has put this over on the hijack this area also, had not seen it there, but figured since I am seeing people affected by it would post it.
Feel free to move it or delete it.

R-C,
Thanks for letting every one know, even though Corrine has posted about it in the Trojan Horse Agent 4.E Instructions   sticky topic within the HijckThis part of the forum.
It is always good to post about thses matters as some of our LzD members may not have seen it

AVG, the popular anti-virus package, has falsely identified Adobe Flash as potentially malicious. The snafu comes just days after AVG slapped a bogus Trojan warning on a core Windows component.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/14/avg_false_positive_flash/

I stopped including AVG when listing "free for personal use antivirus software" in March when they added the "Security Toolbar".  The list is growing on why I continue to leave AVG off the list:
  • Pre-checked Yahoo Search bar disguised as a "Security Toolbar"
  • Zone Alarm false/positive
  • user32.dll (a core Windows component)
  • Adobe Flash

Granted, false/positives occur but after the crippling false detection of user32.dll I would have expected closer scrutiny.  It certainly makes it appear that Grisoft doesn't test their updates on even a basic setup.

The following antivirus software programs are free for personal use.

avast! 4 Home Edition
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic

For those affected by the false detection of user32.dll as a trojan, AVG is offering a free one-year subscription.

well that is nice of them but what about the price some had to pay to have the pc fixed since they had no clue why suddenly it no longer worked?  I hate when things like that happen because many people just really have no idea what happened to them.

I try to steer them to AVAST or AVIRA now days too.
