I'm always suspicious of any first time poster that posts some link to a program. I sometimes look (I always see where the link points and google the site or program) and report the post if I think something might be suspicious.

It seems to me there is a way to disable any new posters from putting live links in posts until a certain number of useful posts are published. Having 10 posts with a dead link to the same program wouldn't count as useful and 9 of those posts would be removed with the post count going back to 1 each time.
There's a modification for vBulletin, that puts a new member's post in a moderation queue if it contains a link. No one except admins & mods can see it until a moderator approves the post.

Maybe SMF has something similar ?

vBulletin is licensed and I believe the most costly.  BC is using IPB, also licensed.  Going to sites with all three different forum software programs, I'd have to look at the AdminCP on a different forum to see if includes Mod Review.

Found this....
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2404
I've never used it, I can neither recommend it, nor disparage it.

If it works as advertised, it should be able prevent new users from posting links, until they reach a certain post count.

Since I don't moderate here, I have no idea if you actually need it.

IMHO, If it ain't broke....
Every mod, is another opportunity for something to go  wrong.

Back on topic:
If Enigma wants to gain legitimacy, this is NOT the way to do it.

Before this started, they weren't even "on my radar".
If someone had recommend SpyHunter, I might have tried it.
Now, after this news broke, I'll avoid it like the plague.

I don't hang around forums that deal a lot with security products and issues so I've yet to see anything SpyHunter related where I go.

If I do, I'll point the higher ups at those sites to this thread so they can get a feel of what is going on with Enigma.

Someone needs to tell Bleeping computer that that gray box, on the right, that can not be closed, is annoying.
I have already donated to the cause. I don't wish to donate again and I don't want to download the pdf.
I had to decrease the size of the font so I could read the article.

Due to the generosity and support of the site's visitors, members, and colleagues, BleepingComputer.com has raised $72,000 towards its legal defense against Enigma Software.  The support and generosity you have shown the site, whether it is through a monetary contribution or just by letting others know, is truly humbling.  I cannot thank you enough!

You could just not go back if the Forum software annoys you.   #Just saying

I have already donated to the cause.

It was not the forum. I was trying to read an article on http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/
the main page and the donate box could not be closed allowing me to read the article. I had to keep decreasing the font size in order to read the article.

plodr, that was what is described as a modal announcement, a box containing information about the suit for visitors until it is dismissed.  Once shown, it shouldn't have shown again.
