Even though a patch was issued, it was disabled by default and was to help debug errors, being the second keylogger discovered in a year doesn't bode well for HP, which is unfortunate.  I have three devices, a 2008 laptop, 2008 desktop and the HP Stream 7 tablet.  I had seriously been considering that any replacement device would be an HP but now will be rethinking that.

How to Check Your HP Laptop for the Synaptic Keylogger and Remove It
Quote
Before we get started explaining how to check your system for this particular driver, it is important to note that the keylogging was not placed in the driver for malicious reasons. It appears that it was instead being used by the driver developers to help them find bugs in the driver while it was being developed. Unfortunately, by mistake this debug trace function was not removed from the driver before it was released for production.
I like that the above paragraph is part of BC's post.  The instructions on how to check & remove the keylogger are in the referenced article.
