Microsoft Store Books Category is Closing
« on: April 02, 2019, 04:30:45 PM »
Effective today, 02April2019, it is no longer possible to purchase eBooks from the Microsoft store.  I haven't purchased any eBooks from the Microsoft Store, however, if you have and haven't read them yet, better get started now.  At some point early this month, Microsoft will begin processing refunds on purchased eBooks at which time you will no longer have access to those books.

See the complete FAQ here:  Books in Microsoft Store.

Very sad! First the music and now the ebooks :(

I hate to say it, but this is why Microsoft has so much trouble breaking into new areas. Many customers over the years have gotten frustrated because of abandonment of devices or other things. It hurt them with the surface when it first launched, customers were afraid to invest in something that may be abandoned once again. Microsoft has been notorious to do this over many years.

There customers are loyal to there OS, but have felt cheated in other areas.

i.e. a Ipod still works, a Zune is pretty much a brick.

My Zune still works -- when I remember to recharge it.  :)  That said, there are so many other sources for eBooks that I was surprised that they were even included in the Microsoft Store.  Libraries aren't limited to paper books, eBooks can also be borrowed free from the library, Amazon Prime offers a free eBook (from a selection) each month.

Amazon has selections of free books even if you aren't a prime member. I don't belong to Amazon Prime but I have 4 e-books stored on my android tablet (mysteries) to read when I have time. These selections change so I keep checking to see if there are other mysteries I want to read. You must have an Amazon account and sign in to see the free and cheap books.

This organization https://standardebooks.org/ cleaned up Guttenberg project books for modern devices.

This Canadian site has tons of free older books and keeps adding daily https://www.fadedpage.com/
I downloaded 11 books based on the character Hildegarde Withers as seen in early movies of 1930's.

Coincidentally, this article was published a couple days ago about all the recent product shutdowns this year by Google.  It is a rather long list.  See Google’s constant product shutdowns are damaging its brand | Ars Technica

Can add HealthVault now. https://mspoweruser.com/microsoft-is-killing-its-healthvault-consumer-health-service/

I'm in the same camp: it's difficult to go anything Microsoft at the moment. I trust nothing to stick around. It either has to be a gigantic success, or end it. As far as books in the store, to me or seemed like a "we have that, check the box showing we're like all the other stores" thing rather than something the company really stood behind.

The cloud can be great, but an offering can end at any moment. Plan accordingly.

As an added bonus, the scale and blood pressure monitor I have connect and upload data to HealthVault. They'll be 'dumb' devices after November 20.
