There is another side to the problem, though. Read on: http://on-murders.blogspot.com/2007/12/megans-law-listing-may-have-led-to.html

Just as a side-note and by no means intended to depreciate your efforts.

Hmm, don't get me wrong, but why don't you simply introduce the death penalty for these offenses then? Because that was basically a death penalty, however cruel the offender may have been. In my country the offense is counted as "compensated" after the penalty (e.g. imprisonment) is over. Don't you have the concept of re-socialization?

Sorry I got you all riled up!  I don't think I should have said what I said how I said it!   I meant if you commit a heinous crime and serve your time, yes I feel that is compensation for what you did.  But I think people need to stop and think before they let urges get the best of them  Just like what I said,  if I hadn't gone off half-cocked and thought a little I would have stated my reply differently.  But when I get an stupid urge and I take time to think, the future results also come to mind?  Again I apologize.  :stupid:
But also, studies done in the US show that rehabilitation fails for the most part and these crimes are committed again? And if I had a sex criminal living near me, I'd be VERY leary.  That person would have to work double to prove to me they have paid, and will not be that kind of person again? But I would give them the chances,  being all the while leary.
I can't know...?

Actually you didn't and let's say I'd be father of a kid which became victim of such an offender I wouldn't be sure whether I could think rationally enough to write something as what I wrote before. But in fact it is our duty, the duty of those who are not directly affected, to be empathetic enough to feel with the victims, but also keep the whole judicial system balanced.

But I think people need to stop and think before they let urges get the best of them
Agreed. In fact this seems to be a struggle between rational thinking and the urges (which are more like instincts). So no wonder some people can't control them. BTW: there was (is?) a special program which has even been advertised on German TV and targeted especially at pedophiles. The slogan was (literal translation) "Do you like children more than you like?" and the program involved (involves?) psychological treatment of people who have the feeling they could become offenders. And yes, there were actually participants in the program. Maybe something similar could actually help in the US, because in my opinion prevention if by far more important than a punishment after it's too late?!

But also, studies done in the US show that rehabilitation fails for the most part and these crimes are committed again? And rightly so. This is anyone's right and I don't question that. But it seems you wouldn't kill such a person. This is the part I condemn - anything else would be lynch law.
