Beta. Software undergoes beta testing shortly before it's released. Beta is Latin for 'still doesn't work.'

SpyDie, Interesting issues here with this new IE7 coming up.  Plus I notice that the Update Mods have posted that Counterspy doesn't currently support IE7?  Argh, I hope Sunbelt hurries up with whatever they need to do to get it ready...for the end of Sept?  End of Oct?

And as a side note, they aren't many blogs that I read that has Bill Gates frequenting...but I notice a reply at the link you posted:

If you have any concerns regarding IE7 and AU, simply set AU to Notification Mode.  That way you will only be told of IE7, and any critical updates, by AU.  You will be left to decide if you want each critical update.  There, you see, no is forced to get anything from us.

Now bow to your king and God have mercy on your soul if your copy of Windows is pirated.

It is a good thing that even tho IE7 will be distributed thru MS Automatic Updates...That there are choices of Install, Don't Install, or Notify Me Later.

So was that really him?*Spammer*??

ripley

ok everyone knows that the second tuesday of the month is "MS patch tuesday" right?

and you stay current on updates...right?

well i have the notification turned off ( having a dialup and auto update is not too good a deal)

and i go to
IE
tools
check for updates
CUSTOM

and then see what is ther for me and "pick and choose" and can see the size of a download and if any problems before i put it on my system

and i can select "don't bother me" on any i don't want  ( IE7)

ripley,

I actually have no idea if that comment is by Bill Gates himself, I would obviously have my doubts on it though.

Yes and yes...lessons I learned from hanging around LzD.

I started out choosing CUSTOM updates, but then switched to automatic.  I think I'm going to go back to CUSTOM, and have alittle more control.  I also will be waiting a time period before installing IE7 when it is released, as well as recommending family members wait as well.  I'd rather other more knowledgable ppl work out the bugs before I jump into it.

And SpyDie, shucks, I s'ppose you are right. Mr. Gates wouldn't be taking the time to post a snippet of a reply like that, when he has plenty of employees to do it for him

WOW. this is big news.

Ripley brought up she's heard Counterspy doesn't support IE7 -- could be OTHER things don't also.

...IE 6 sees pages a little differently than other browsers, due to "bugs" interpreting CSS, etc. if these are changed in 7, it could affect the way pages render on screen. lots of people realizing their pages look different suddenly.

i wish microsoft would make things a little less "transparent," for us who like keeping tabs on our systems.

-- strange: even when i don't launch IE, certain apps still "use" it for updates as it "sleeps." (i have an app that says i'm not connected to the net, when i try for updates, EVENTHO I'M CONNECTED WITH FIREFOX... but, changing the IE setting to ALWAYS DIAL MY DEFAULT CONNECTION allows the app update to go through. SO: updating from 6 to 7 may have ramifications, even for those of us who rarely or NEVER power up IE...)

* glad i stumbled onto this board...

PS. right now, it's AUGUST 10th 2006. i just had TWO major microsoft updates in a row, but IE is still 6, not 7...

IE7 isn't ready for prime time yet.  You can follow the progress here:  http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/default.aspx

corrine,
thanks so much for that link. picked this up there:
How the Automatic Updates installation process works
If you decide to install IE7, it will preserve your current toolbars, home page, search settings, and favorites and installing will not change your choice of default browser. You will also be able to roll back to IE6 at any point by using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

so, if that's correct, maybe it's safe to tinker with 7, then roll back to 6 if there are problems??

OH, MITCH: you have alot of good info re the best settings for IE 6 (in Phantom Mixer). should you do the same re 7 settings, i'm sure it would be VERY appreciated by us all...

NOTE: the original netscape fit on a floppy disk ! but that was in the days of gopher and other things that no one remembers ;-D

Guess not, Mitch.  You were just too far ahead of the times.  FL didn't show up on the scene until 2K.
