Two men arrested in connection with worm which hit high profile media companies, Sophos reports

26 August 2005

Experts at SophosLabs™, Sophos's global network of virus, spyware and spam analysis centers, have welcomed news reports that authorities in Morocco and Turkey have arrested two men in connection with computer worm attacks that hit organizations such as CNN, ABC Television, The New York Times and the Financial Times last week.

According to media reports the FBI has confirmed that 18-year-old Farid Essebar, has been arrested in Morocco, and Atilla Ekici, 21, was arrested in Turkey on Thursday.

The Zotob worms and related variants hit computers running Windows 2000 at a number of high profile companies by exploiting a security loophole in Microsoft's software.

Great News roddy32! :D

Reports like this one makes me undescribably happy and hopefully these "gentlemen" will be able to "enjoy" some long term sentences in their homeland prisons known for less recreation facilities.

Zotob worm linked to credit card fraud ring

Turkish authorities have linked one of the suspects in the Zotob worm case to individuals thought to be part of a credit card fraud ring, according to the FBI.

Atilla Ekici, a 21-year-old Turk who used the nickname "Coder," may be affiliated with people thought to be part of a credit card fraud ring in Turkey, an FBI representative said Tuesday. Ekici was one of two men arrested last week for allegedly unleashing several computer worms, including the Zotob worm that disrupted businesses worldwide two weeks ago.

Turkish authorities have identified about a dozen individuals thought to be involved in credit card fraud. "It is believed that these individuals have links to Coder," the FBI representative said. "The investigation is still ongoing, but there is no indication these people actually wrote or distributed the Zotob worm."
