Since my computer is three years old, I didn't expect to get the fall update right away, and just checked so I could get the flash update for Edge & IE.

But....

Based on past experience, it would have been quicker to just use the "media creation tool" and get it over with.

Seeing as how it is being released to "newer" devices first, I am surprised that you are getting it so soon.  One of the major changes that was made in the process of upgrading to a new build was to do as much as possible during that install process as possible so people can continue working while that goes on in the background, thus reducing the down time that was experienced with previous upgrades.  It still takes time but not as much down time as in the past.

(Don't forget to check System Restore settings after completing the upgrade.)

Weird...
It finished "Preparing" and asked for a reboot...

After the reboot, the only thing installed was the FlashPlayer update. It was still asking for a reboot for the Windows 1709 update....

After three reboots, I tried to uninstall it, but apparently that doesn't happen with partially installed updates.

As I type this I'm attempting to see if the "Media Creation Tool" can finish the job.

No wonder all my friends at the DunningFools forum are paranoid about unplanned updates :)

I ran the media update without a hitch. I have a number of systems to update and it is faster for me.

The "Media Creation Tool" did the job...
If Windows Update hadn't rushed it, that's how I would have done it after the "non-insiders" stopped having serious problems.

Ran Windows Update again today, and got the Edge/IE Flash Player update (again).

Since my (possibly premature) update, I've had some problems with some components not working.

"Windows Fax and Scan" could scan but any attempt to FAX resulted in an error message. (The fax-modem was tested by going online with one of my old dialup accounts).

Attempts to open "Store" resulted in a yellow screen with an error message.

There might have been more, but that's all I've stumbled across since Tuesday. most of my "usual" activities were working.

It appears to have been fixed by opening the "Command Prompt" as an administrator and running "SFC /SCANNOW".

The log file was way to big to bother reading, but a search for "fax" found multiple lines containing the words "Error: Overlap: Duplicate ownership for directory". A search for "Store" found multiple lines containing the words "Repairing corrupted file".

I'm not sure it's the same issue. Since I usually use Classic Shell, I wouldn't have noticed if the apps were missing from the Windows 10 Start Menu. (They were present on the "classic" menu).

When I googled the error message on the "Store" screen, I found a lot of solutions, with "sfc /scannow" described as a last resort. When I also had a problem, sending a FAX, rather than trying to find other affected apps, I moved it up to first.

At this point it's too late to look for the "download arrows", the Windows 10 menu looks normal now.
