Microsoft is planning to release its Windows 10 operating system in the summer. While the software maker isn’t naming an exact date, Windows chief Terry Myerson is committing the company to a summertime launch today. "We continue to make great development progress and shared today that Windows 10 will be available this summer in 190 countries and 111 languages," says Myerson. Microsoft is making Windows 10 available as a free upgrade for existing Windows 7 and Windows 8 users for a year, and that offer will start this summer. [...]

I can rationalize legal versions of XP and Vista software not getting a free upgrade due to their advanced age (nothing lasts forever, right?), but I should think those users will swallow a bitter pill when they find out that pirates are being 'rewarded'.

It's not just the Chinese that will benefit from Microsoft's upgrade program to Winodws 10, it's all that are using Rogue copies. Note that the roadmap on rogue COA's has not yet been set.

I have just bought a new Acer with Win 8.1 2 month ago and find it great, except for a few annoing things like the start up screen, charm bar and such ( ?#@€!%$ ). But I can't wait to try out the new Win 10.

There is some back-peddling by those journalists who originally said all counterfeit countries, with original articles being "updated", such as Windows 10 will be free for some software pirates | The Verge

Update March 18th, 7:40AM: article updated to note the offer could be limited to China.

The original Reuters' article, Microsoft tackles China piracy with free upgrade to Windows 10 | Reuters, did specifically point to China:

Quote
"We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," he said in a telephone interview with Reuters. The plan is to "re-engage" with the hundreds of millions of users of Windows in China, he said, without elaboration.

And then there's this - via Ed Bott Windows 10 to launch 'this summer' with free upgrades even for pirated copies & this from ARS Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for all users worldwide

On a personal note, it's a shame this accelerated news of Windows 10 being released earlier by as least six months has quickly become a discussion of Piracy.

Here’s Microsoft full statement from Upgrading to Windows 10 on pirated versions won't get you a valid license:

Quote
The consumer free upgrade offer for Windows 10 applies to qualified new and existing devices running Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. Some editions are excluded from the consumer free upgrade — including Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to other Windows 10 enterprise offerings.

"We have always been committed to ensuring that customers have the best Windows experience possible. With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered non-genuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mislicensed after the upgrade. According to industry experts, use of pirated software, including Non-Genuine Windows, results in a higher risk of malware, fraud (identity theft, credit card theft, etc), public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions."
