update instructions - uninstall or not?

I would like to suggest that with the program updates notifications, that there be a note included somewhere about whether to uninstall the existing version or not before doing the update.

Some programs have to be uninstalled before installing the update and some can just be installed right over the existing program. It's not always easy to find out what the appropriate sequence is. I asked this queston about the MVPS hosts file: http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=244.0 but haven't gotten an answer yet and can't find documentation that tells me, so I haven't yet updated. I read the FAQs link, but it didn't address that question.

Thank you for the suggestion. As the members of the security community update many, many sites, installation/update instructions are above and beyond what they have time for. That said, it is not a standard practice to have to uninstall a software before installing an update to the definitions.

I moved the post to the other HOSTS thread with the installation questions, sent a PM to pastywhitegurl about my action, but promptly forgot to mention that in the back room.

I'm not asking for detailed instructions...just a note to say whether or not to uninstall the existing application before downloading and installing new versions.

It never hurts to ask, but I suspect the update moderators copy/paste at the hundreds of sites they maintain, and "customizing" for this site may not be possible.
