other suggestions above seem plausible too, but -

not knowing the layout of your building / house,
the best thing is an "n" wireless router.
"n" punches through walls a whole lot better than "g" "b" or "a"
"n" may even give you a great signal on your back patio - if you like to surf in the snow...
if your laptop is 5 or more years old, you will have to buy an "n" wireless dongle (usb plug in thingy) for it.
and many newer laptops don't come w/ "n" either.
