Hi, Ghost.

Hmmm, how to put this.  Based on some of the information you have shared about your friend's computer knowledge, he really, really shouldn't have System Restore disabled.  Please be sure it is enabled and create a fresh restore point.

Updates:

It appears that Security Check hasn't been updated for the recently released security updates for Java and Adobe Reader.  I don't see Adobe Reader 8 in the list of installed programs so gather you already uninstalled it.

Because he has OpenOffice installed, Java is needed.  However, unless he plays online games, it can be disabled in the browsers that he uses.  See the instructions in section 3 of Java, The Never-Ending Saga.

If he does not frequently access PDF files, replacing Adobe Reader with an alternate such as Sumatra PDF would result in considerably less concern for security vulnerabilities.  See Replacing Adobe Reader with Sumatra PDF.  Sumatra PDF has a small footprint and it is easy to change the bright yellow background color to something he may prefer.

.NET Framework:

.NET Framework errors can be troublesome to fix.  The update that is causing problems is for .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 on Windows XP, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742597.  There is a Microsoft Fix it solution for the error 0x80070643, in "Method 1: Fix MSI software update registration corruption issues" at Error codes "0x80070643" or "0x643" occur when you install the .NET Framework updates

If running the Fix it solution does not solve the problem for installing the update, it will be necessary to follow the instructions for Windows XP in Method 2 for ".NET Framework 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5" (not .NET Framework 4).

Please let me know how you make out and if there is anything else I can assist with.

fixit didnt help the problem with .NET Framework 1.1 sp1. i tried method 2 and uninstalled it. then reinstalled it using windows update and ran windows update 3 times to get all sp1 updates. i shut down the machine and let it sit for 2 hours. i restarted and no update notice so at this time i think the update problem is solved.
i will shutdown the machine and let it sit over night. in the morning ill boot it up and see what happens.
i also uninstalled 1clickdownload, ran malwarebytes and it found funmoods in one users folder and removed it also.

Corrine

Thanks, Ghost.  Let's hope the .NET Framework issue is resolved.

For Funmoods, it would be a good idea to run a couple of the specialized tools.  First, let's see if there are any remnants.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode to your Desktop.

  •   Double-click AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  •   Click Search.
  •   A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  •   Please post the contents of that logfile with your next response.
Note: The log can also be found at C:\AdwCleaner[XX].txt where XX denotes the number of times the application has been run, i.e., R1

Hi, Ghost.

With the .NET Framework problem fixed, no signs of a "blue margin", and everything updated, unless you spot something else on your friend's computer, it appears as though you can clean up the downloaded programs and return his computer to him.

For AdwCleaner, do the following to uninstall AdwCleaner.

  •   Double-click AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  •   Click Uninstall
  •   Confirm with yes
SecurityCheck can be deleted from the desktop and you can also remove DDS.

You're welcome, Ghost.  I'm glad the problems he was having were negligent this time.
