Hello, all!

Here again!

Today, I am asking for your help, in order to solve some problems with my professor's computer!

It is a Lenovo (Windows 8) touchscreen notebook and she can't download anything with it. Every effort to run a program leads to this message: this app can't run on your pc. To find apps for this pc open the Windows store.

Is there something to do for her?

Is this a brand new computer that was never able to download anything, or has the problem suddenly developed?

Well, I really don't know. I realised that it is a new computer and always had the problem. I made a mistake in the previous post: it can download applications, but it can not run them.

Is this your professor's personal computer or one provided by the school?  If the notebook is part of the school network, the system administrator might have turned off the use of certain apps using Group Policy.

Windows 8 includes the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter utility, sometimes it can automatically resolve compatibility problems. Try running it by right-clicking on a problematic application, then choosing the Troubleshoot Compatibility command from the shortcut menu.

Can you provide some examples of the apps that won't run?

DR M

It's her personal computer.

Examples of applications: classic shell, MBAM, Sumatra, Farbar tool and security check (I tried to post the results). Actually, nothing runs.

When I right click on one of them I get no compatibility command option.

EDIT: The computer has Windows RT.

What browser are you using and have you tried a different browser?  It may also be helpful to know which model Lenovo notebook she has.

Hi, Corrine. I edited my post above. The computer has Windows RT.

It has Internet Explorer as a browser. I can't try something else, because after download, it will not run. I don't know the model. I entered computer's properties and I only see that it is a Lenovo, full Windows support with 5 touch points.

If she has a Lenovo IDeaPad Yoga 11.  Lenovo discontinued sale of the RT in 2013.  (http://www.zdnet.com/article/lenovo-website-halts-sale-of-windows-rt-version-of-ideapad-yoga-11-hybrid-tablet/).

Windows RT uses an ARM processor which is completely different to the standard x86 based that you are accustomed to.  As a result, Windows RT cannot run classic Windows programs of any sort. In order to achieve a good standard of programming for RT Surface will only allow programs to be installed from Windows Store.

Although a year old, see RT Desktop Store: Browse And Install Desktop Programs In Windows RT 8.1 and this Windows RT 8.1: FAQ - Windows Help.

Thank you for the information, Corrine.

There is an option for upgrade to Windows 8.1. Can this change the situation?

No it won't "improve the situation" regarding downloading programs that are not compatible with the ARM processor but it will improve the OS and there will be no need for Classic Shell since the desktop is easily accessible with the 8.1 update.  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/whats-new

I think that she must buy a real computer! Hard disk is only 23gb and only one is free!!! I am trying a disk clean up now, to free some space!

Ha!  I remember when I purchased a new computer with a 4 GB hard drive and was certain I was set for life.  The new hard drive I got for a computer during the summer is 1 TB!

He he! I remember my first memory stick! 256mb!!!

P.S. Disk cleanup still running! Why is it taking so long?

Give it a chance, Panos.  Must be a lot to go through.

Is it Windows RT 8 or 8.1?

Windows RT devices only run built-in apps or apps that you download from the Windows Store.  Secure Boot on Windows RT is configured so that devices can only run apps authorized by Microsoft. They can run Microsoft Office and new Windows apps designed with a full-screen user interface, but they can't run classic apps like Photoshop or iTunes.
