I was wondering about the Mail application in Windows 10. Has anyone tried it? Is it ... clever to switch to this app from Thunderbird or Outlook? Are there any opinions?

Although there may be technical differences....
To me it's not much different than using the "Outlook" web mail in your browser, and configuring it to also retrieve other mail.
In Windows 8.X they even looked alike. Now, they seem to have a different look.

I prefer using a client like Thunderbird, so I can archive my mail on my hard drive, free from prying hacker eyes....
The downside - If my computer crashes, I could lose everything that I haven't backed up.

Panos, you don't have to remove Thunderbird to try Mail in Windows 10.  Just launch the app and add an account.  Try working with it and see how you like it.

Yes, I tried it a little, with one account, but I can't find somewhere a contacts section. Is there such a section, and if yes, is there a possibility to add contacts from Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail?

PETE!, what do you mean that you will loose anything if the computer crashes? One thing ''I understood'' from this thread is that when the account is IMAP, then all the emails are stored to the server, so you can find them again. When it is a POP3 account, then yes, when the computer or the hard disk crashes, as mine, you loose everything.

Anyway, I liked Windows Live Mail, but since I have an outlook mail, I had to choose another Mail client. I have tried Thunderbird last months, and it does its job, but ... I don't like it. That's why I check Windows 10 Mail app now, but it seems that I can't find what I want.

To protect my privacy, in the unlikely event of a hacker, breaking into one of my email accounts...
I use POP protocol whenever possible (only one of my accounts doesn't have provisions for POP).

In Thunderbird I UNcheck "Leave messages on server"

While I'm online, my Primary Email accounts get checked every 10 minutes, others less often, but at least once a day.

Once my mail is downloaded, the only copy is the one on my computer. The only mail(s) readily available to someone who hacks the server, are the ones that I haven't downloaded. It's an extra level of privacy (not fool proof), but there's a risk of losing something important if the computer fails before I backed it up.

If you don't feel the need for the "paranoid approach", feel free to use IMAP, webmail, and cloud based services. There's no such thing as total privacy on the internet anyway.

In Windows 10 Mail, the contacts section is in the "People" app. (Where are my contacts in Windows 10?).  From what I gather, the Mail Migration add-on does not work with third-party mail apps like Thunderbird.  Check the People app to see if all your contacts were included.

OK... Application in application!

PETE!, I don't think that your approach is ... ''paranoid approach''! Many times I act exactly this way, and I keep in mind what you are saying. But as you said, there is no total privacy in the internet...  :(

I'm trying to set up my accounts and use Windows Mail. But ... I can't find a way to create an account two times, with different settings each time: IMAP and POP. In Thunderbird I created two accounts, with the same email address, the one IMAP and the other one POP. With this way, I can delete emails from my phone, without losing them from my computer.

If I inadvertently delete an email from my phone (HTC One, Windows 8.1), it is in the "Trash" folder ("Deleted" folder on Outlook.com) and can easily be retrieved (as long as I remember to do so ;) ).  However, merely reading the email on my phone shows it as read in Windows Mail (or my preferred Outlook.com).  Note:  If you haven't done so yet, you will want to change the sync settings:  Where are my email messages or events? - Office Support.

You may also want to look at Mail and Calendar for Windows 10 FAQ - Outlook as well as changes/additions in the Anniversary Update:  What's new in Mail and Calendar for Windows 10 - Outlook.

I don't know... I'm confused now...

The appearance is very attractive, and I like it, but:

I had problems with some attachment files. I had to click the forward button to have access in them.

I have to click on the sync button to get an email. Why no automatic option for receiving emails and have to wait 15 minutes?

Although I set a POP3 account, when I delete the message in my phone, it disappears from the computer too...

I'm looking for the read receipt for the emails (the notification sent when an email appears on the recipient's screen), but I can't find it.

So, I will play a little more with it, but, yes, I am confused with all these about email clients...

The object of the Mail app in Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8.1) is not to replace Outlook.  Thus, it is not a full-featured email client.

Yes, I understood this, so I ... let it go (as the song says).

QuoteIf I inadvertently delete an email from my phone (HTC One, Windows 8.1), it is in the "Trash" folder ("Deleted" folder on Outlook.com) and can easily be retrieved (as long as I remember to do so ;) ).

But still, perhaps there is an email I want to keep, but not in my phone. If I move an email from trash in Inbox (from the computer), this email will appear in the Inbox of the phone. Right?

Anyway, I don't want to bother you with my ... strange preferences!

But, I'll let you know what I finally did.  ;D

I removed all my accounts from the Windows Mail application (see in my previous post why).
I downloaded Mailbird, an email client with many positive feedback in the Internet. It seems to be a nice client, with many features, but again I can't have two accounts (IMAP and POP) for one email address, as I have in Thunderbird. Although, I will try it, and perhaps I will keep both, Thunderbird for the POP account and Mailbird for the whole appearance and features.

That's my news for now.  :)
